Need 18" tire help

Hey guys, I bought some 18" 350Z rims to replace my 17" rims that I damaged earlier this month. I mounted some 225/60/18's on the rims and found out that they won't fit in the wheel well. (my car is still in the shop so I took them to the shop.)
The Firestone tire dealer has some 225/45/18's on sale that I have to buy by Saturday to get the special sale price. My question, what size(s) of tire can I buy that will work on the Maxima?

If it's an 8" rim I'd go with 245/40's. 225s are a lil narrow for an 8" rim IMO.

225/45 is gunna be smaller than the stock diamater by 3%(doesnt sound like much....but it really is) so you will regester on your speedo that your going faster than you really are and your odo will get off.

225/50 is <1% diff from stock size so things will be exact. get 225/50 unless your trying to race and dont live in the north where it snows stick with 225 they arnt "to narrow" as some say especially if you get a good compound. not to mention cheaper, and in snow or rain you will be much safer.

Jake

If you dont trust my math then here
The stock tire for our car (2000-2003 Nissan Maxima) is 225-50-17. That tire will have a circumference of 81.23615" and spin 779.9483 times per mile. The (225-45-18) has a circumference of 81.59484" and spins around 776.5197 time per mile, or 99.56041 of stock.
So if your speedometer shows you are going 100 miles per hour, you are actually going a little faster than 100 mph.
If your odometer shows you went 100 miles, you really went a little bit farther. Not significant.

The smaller tires 225-40-18. They are only 78.81193" around and will spin 803.9392 times per mile. That's 3.076% less than the stock tires. If your speedo shows you are going 100 miles per hour, you are actually going slower than that, by about 3%. If your odometer shows you went 100 miles, you really went about 3% few miles. Plus the smaller tires aren't going to fill up your wheel wells as nice and you may have to lower the car in order for it to look decent.

Thanks 2slow, that tire calculator was a great help. I used it to narrow my search down to the 4 best sizes I could run and still be within +/- 2 mph of the stock tire speed and diameter. I'm looking at either 225/45, 245/40, 255/35 or 245/45's.

Another quick and easy method to search for appropriate tire sizes is by looking at desired tire's specifications and comparing the OE sized model to others.

For example, looking at the Continental Extreme Contact DW ( http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....remeContact+DW; under the specs tab) you can see the OE size is listed at 805 rpm (revs per mile) and you can quickly find close alternatives. You can then also quickly look at prices across the suitable alternatives.

I got the 245/40's, when it's all said and done my speedometer will show 60 mph but I'll actually be going 60.3. That's close enough for me, thanks again all.
