Overheating Problem

Ok guys this is not Maxima related but i am at a loss and cant figure this out! Did a timing belt, water pump, thermostat and new hoses on a 2000 Xterra with a 3.3. Now it was fine for a few days, then all off a sudden it ran hot. Let it cool off and it was fine for a few days then it will get hot again then its fine. Then its overheats again....wtf is goin on lol. Its not at any certain point or anything that is triggering it that i can think of. I really cant figure this lil sucker out. It goes days without any issues at all. . any ideas?????

how is your coolant level? could you have air in the system?

/\ agreed air in the system could cause an overheating issue.

i would just let it run hot ( but not overheat ) hen keep the overflow tank full, when the engine cools it will create a vacuum and suck in the coolant in the overflow and purge the air out.

if you do this and it still overheats then you may want to look into it further

when your car starts overheating does your heater still blow hot air? if not you have a flow problem wether it be an air bubble or malfunctioning thermostat.

Also on the maximas i am pretty sure there are two thermostats i bet the xterra is the same. I think one is called a flow control valve or something like that but they both work the same way might want to check into that. Or maybe the thermostat you replaced is sticky.

Just some thoughts

Not really, just want to know what he comes up with. Sometimes folks forget to update and the thread dies. This way if he subscribed to his own thread than he may get an email to remind him. My car just got towed to the shop on Sunday night. I hope it is a waterpump but it may be a blown head gasket.
