advanced timing question
ive done some searching and some reading and it appears that this whole advanced timing thing is good. I understand that i would need to run only 91 or higher octane if i did it, which is fine. I only put Shell's 93 octane in my car.
my question is: am i going to see any gains with a almost completely stock car? (i have the stillen SRI) should i wait and get the H/E first? would there be any negatives to doing this with just the intake?
ive search and the only people that have done this have had far more modded cars than mine.

My thoughts on having the timing advance, one of the very first bolt on mods for me was the custom built short ram intake (which sounded great as well as it gives you a few more horse power) the gains are typically in the middle to higher end of the RPM scale, and one looses a bit of torque on the lower RPM scale. The timing advance helps to restore some of the lower end torque lose and again helps to give you a few more horses through the middle and higher end RPM's. You would be correct in having to run 91 octane or run the chance of retarding the advance back down, I can think of no disadvantages to having the timing advance done with your current setup of just the SRI. I also was able to note some improvement in the gas mileage as well after havng the advance done.
I'm glad to hear more good than bad about this. I got my car back from the dealer today because I put a fuse in the wrong spot like an idiot. I asked the service advisor if he knows if I could give someone 20 bucks to get my timing advanced, and he told me to show up next saturday when he's there.

ooohhh this thread reminds that i never posted back from when i got my timing advanced.
car pulls pretty decent now. it also could be the fact that i also replaced the fuel filter (aka strainer) as well.
and my car is 100% bone stock right now. and not to mention my tires break loose in 2nd a lot more than they used to since giving the car alot of service maintnence.

i know the filter is under the back seat but is it also true there is one on the fire wall like in the 4th gens? a guy at orileys or autozone or something told me this...i searched but found no answer

i asked the service guy at Nissan and he just told me there is just the one under the seat called the "strainer".
then again they could be wrong since some guys at Nissan will argue that it's a "lifetime" fuel strainer.

I didn't read the entire thread, but advance timing benefits are negligible. If you can have your timing advanced for free, and want to try it, just do it. If you end up having to pay for it, a waste of money.
Please enlighten us?
I had mine advanced years ago...no difference in fuel economy, I think 1 MPG increase. However, I cannot attribute that to the advanced timing as your foot action on the pedal will play a huge factor in your mileage.
Better throttle response is subjective...I didn't feel a change.
Again...I said the benefits are negligible. If you are about "better throttle response" and get a questionable better mileage then by all means do it.
Sure...let me see the dyno numbers. I don't see any?

I have done the timing advance on over 30 cars since I got autoenginuity and I have not heard one complaint.
dam i wanted to get in on this a$$ beating but i got backed up at work and could'nt reply back! when i read the original comment saying "show us the numbers...oh that's right there arent any" i wanted to light our fellow member up but looks like this job has already been done.
timing advance has always been the safest cheapest HP mod in the big book of engine modifications.

johnny thanks for the numbers.. but im so confused...i dont see the numbers that show the baseline.. idk maybe its me.. maybe its the wacky tq lines..but IE> @4-4.50 rpm.. there is a ~30 hp gain.. i could only wish ..lol .. is it me?
What the hell is your problem? I wasn't complaining about it. Just stating my experiences with it. No reason for you to be such a douchebag.
But thanks for showing the numbers. I am now "enlightened."

you said show me the dyno chart and people have.
throttle response and MPG are subjective but more people than not have stated they saw an improvement in both. maybe there is something wrong with you car that kept you from seeing the gains.
keep it friendly dude and stop attacking other members or stay the hell out of my thread

BTW throwing insults for no reason is so immature, go get laid or something you seem tense.
no need for name calling...but you had to put another .org member down stating that you think the timing advance is a "waste of money" and state "Where's the dyno chart showing this?"
statements like that are just typical naysayers who disbelieve everything and like to drive and go through life with blinders on.
people like you have to have a supercharger or any other FI unit bolted to the motor to be able to tell any kind of difference. and there is nothing wrong with that, but don't put someone else down just YOU can't feel it.
dude you were being a smart ***, like were were talking about a turbonator or something; and this topic has been discussed many times here and most have good feedback of it. But just because you felt nothing doesnt meed nothing improves.

I only threw the insults at you after your little tiff post. I was simply stating the advanced timing didn't do much for me and seemed like a waste of money if you had to pay for the Consult II programming. However, there was a lot of backlash with my thoughts on the matter. Fine, doesn't bother me, however, I was simply asking for some dyno numbers.
Thank God, someone posted up the dyno numbers otherwise we would probably still be arguing the perceived benefits. So thank you to those two members who posted the dyno numbers.
It is funny how someone with a different opinion in here is berated and chastised...sorry I don't normally flow with the norm, but at least I can respect other's opinions and not look to instantly flame, berate, or look to one up them.

And no, I was fine with seeing a dyno chart showing the actual gains. However, there is A LOT of butt dyno action going on.
Again...re-read the entire thread. The put downs only started when NIGHTMARE decided to be a jackass.
you should at least pay attention when trying to prove yourself right.
i'm sorry if i hurt your feeling i'll try to be more gentle next time

no need for getting hostile
