Tuneup ?

I have a 2001 maxima with 155k on it. I am looking to improve the performance of my maxima. All i did was the spark plugs and changed the air filter to a k & n. What else should i do to get the maximum performance? Thanks

be more specific. Are you looking for "like new" performance, or are you looking for "better than stock" performance?

Do you feel like you're missing performance right now?

the maxima engine doesn't respond well to a "tune" for extra performance. If you want more power, you need bolt-ons.....ypipe, bpipe, boost, whatever. It's not like a turbo car where you can just tune the boost for an extra 30-40-60whp...

If you want a little more responsive feel (but no real extra power), get the timing advanced to 17* (on an 00-01), which will improve throttle response. Problem is, you need the dealer to do this, and most won't...unless you can slip some cash to a tech.

OP: If you're at 155k miles, I really hope you've already done fluid changes before. If not, transmission fluid is a must, as well as brake fluid at very least.

yeah ive been doing some research on the timing advance with an 01 and was interested. along with that my next upgrade is y pipe and just purchased catback as my exhaust was rusted through.

im new to this site but once i can post a thread with this 15 post rule, hopefully i could find a close location to get the timing advance...plus i feel like that would be helpful to a lot of people

just drive to a nissan dealer, go around back, and find some guy to get the consult 2 tool to advance your timing for $20. Although after I did mine I didn't notice any improvement in anything. The y pipe is def a good mod though. As will be headers with greddy emanage ult with a tune

timing advance won't give more power. It's just minor throttle response improvement, and not everyone notices it.

downside is that if you run regular gas, you might knock more often = bad for engine. I always ran super.

I would only use 93 or above on vq's, and it only makes a few dollars difference every fill up

leave custommaxima and go directly to Cattman if you want the best products....

00-01 no point in headers.....a y-pipe will get you virtually as much power at much less cost, since ypipe eliminates the precats. IN the 02-03 you need headers to eliminate the precats.

i may sound like an idiot as i am not familiar with emissions test but if i live in PA and get rid of the precats, would i still pass inspection? also a relative does our inspections so if this did make me fail ,could he overlook this and allow my car to pass? thanks for ur help irish

If it's a sniffer test, just make sure that the car is warmed up so the main cat is cleaning the emissions.

If it's a plug-in test, you just need to make sure that you're not throwing any emissions codes. When you remove the precats, you wil throw a code since the 02s rightly sense them not "cleaning." The workaround is o2 simulators, which trick the computer into telling the emissions system that everything is fine. They're cheap and easy to install. But they are illegal, so need to be hidden well so the emissions visual inspection doesn't catch em.

Do a search on the topic and you'll find plenty.

I have a 2K GXE with an auto. The performance is less than I expected. Its not bad but I thought it woudl be better. I got beat to about 80mph(we ran out of road) by a 2002 sentra ser. Not by a wholel lot but I still got beat. Very disappointing. Soo Wherecan I get a Y pipe from at a good price??? Also why is the darn CAI so expensive? I cant find one for under $300. My 02 SER I could get one for $60 all day long(I didnt as I got as better one but I could ) any help to get just a bit more out of this so I dont look to bad in front of all my sentra friends. We have another guy with a 03 SE max and he beats us all
