Reverse not working, then working!!! (A/T)

So I get in my car today and noticed i cant back out the driveway!! When I put it in reverse, the car wont move even with acceleration. It feels like its stuck. So I put it in neutral and pushed it out because everything else worked fine, I drove and parked carefully in spot to where i didnt need to back out. What a pain in the ***?!?! Forward but no backward, LOL.....

I pulled the codes later at autozone and got P0732 which is a "gear 2 ratio incorrect". WTF is this? So I was so pissed off that when I was coming home from autozone at a stop sign I put it in reverse and hit the gas a lil more than before and the car jerks backwards HARD... I thought the tranny was gone at that point!!! But the reverse worked like NOTHING HAPPENED!! It even felt kinda better than when the Reverse wouldn't work, I mean the overall shifting of the tranny that is.

Tranny issue it is, but anyone have a good idea of whats happening mechanically? There are no previous search posts and not much in chilton/hayes... Any help is appreciated...

Car is a 2000 I30t, 148K bought at 120K used. Havent done a trans drain and refill yet. But I suppose its deeper than that since apparently my gear 2 ratio is incorrect???? ........

I was at a dead stop on a level road when I hit the gas while in reverse, which jerked the car back hard but seemed to fix the issue for now.

So whats the next move I make:

1) Get a tranny drain and refill? I dont want to "flush" since I have seen problems galore!!

2) Do I drive the car around until the tranny breaks down further and then hit the mechanic up?

OR

3) Find a tranny specialist to get an estimate and not drive the car around to prevent the problem from getting worse? We know whats gonna happen when I do that, $1500+.

The car seems to shift fine, so I just dont know what the next step is. Please help me make a decision at least, anybody with a rationale and logical approach...

thanks maxima-izers....

Drain & refill, 100%, speaking from personal experience here on multiple cars that were UNDRIVEABLE until fresh fluid was put in. Just get the nose as high up in the air as you can and you'll get out 8-9 qt's, you can also drop the pan & clean it + the magnets if you really want to be aggressive about it.

After that hope for the best, change it out every 30K if it keeps going, but in the event it does fail then I would HIGHLY recommend that YOU get a tranny from car-part.com and find a mechanic who will do it reasonably close to the 4 book hours Alldata calls for. It's not that bad at all, having done quite a few it's a casual afternoon job for me now, lol.

KRRZ350,

Thank you, great information. That's what I was looking for, some form of navigation to steer me in the right direction.

On car-parts.com it asks for a "locking diff" vs a "non-locking diff". Which one would a I30T have, I know the tranny is different on the t than the normal I30's. Not sure if Maxima's have any tranny's similar to the T. I'll figure it out, just thought you'd know since u worked on several tranny's.

Later for now...
