02 max overheating?

everytime I keep the car on and parked, it begans to overheat after 10min. But when I start driving it, going 40mph or on the freeway, it cools back down. And also, when I turn the heater on, it cools it down a bit. When i have the a/c on and parked, it begans to blow hot air after those 10min. What could the problem be?

Yup, your symptons suggest fans most likely the problem. Check your fuses.

+2.... I went through something like that not too long ago and ended up replacing the whole fan assembly; they were dead.

probably a bad thermostat or clogged radiator

From another recent overheating thread...

The issue could be a thermostat stuck closed, thereby by-passing the radiator; which sounds like the true culprit to me. Page 16 shows how to remove and test the thermostat: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/2000/lc.pdf. Although, for the time required to remove and the thermostat cost you might as well replace it and test the old one.

Also check the coolant level which could indicate a leak or bad radiator cap.

You can do turn the AC in high on a cold engine and check if the fans kick in immeditely.. If yes, then the fans are OK.

I haven't yet found someone on the forum who has a overheating problem with the sensors (on the return path).

I went thro this heating problem a few years back and most overheating issues almost certainly comes back to the radiator which could be partially clogged to make diagnosis even harder.

I would recommend changing the radiator, hoses, thermostat, pressure clamps and offcourse doing a complete flush of the systeam with Nissan Long Life coolant. Hopefully the issue will resolve and won't have to get to the cooling dept for 5-7 yrs (that is exactly what I did and relieved that I did the above).

Good luck.

not trying to hijack anyone's thread but i have a 00 se and did all the same mentioned above 6-7months ago and my car just started overheating well at least the gauge says it is but im not to sure of it if you touch everything under the hood its warm or a little hot not scalding hot, im lost cause the gauge is erratic it will be hot and then out of no where it will be normal again. i have replaced everything but the temp switch, coolant temp sensor and the water valve thing on the driver side. any help would be greatly appreciated

Possibly a issue with the thermostat, or your fans could not be functioning properly. Good Luck.

lol, sorry just didnt want to have 30 of the same overheating threads.. yours sounds like it might be the coolant level or maybe the fans. try the coolant first if its still not ok and the fans work then try a flush.

I'm hijacking also, sorry, as I have exactly same problem on my '02. Looks like passenger side fan isn't turning on. Haven't checked fuses yet.

Question: Is there any way to replace the single fan only or do I need to buy entire assembly?

Hey guys I had this problem with my '00. I just went ahead and bought a radiator and thermostat assembly thingy (lol) off of ebay and replaced it all since I've got quite a few miles on it anyway I figured it would all crap out eventually anyway... I did the job myself and am not an expert by far. It cost me around 210 total and took about 2 hours. Hope this helps.

Like SAL210 suggested - the fans actually serve no porpuse after about 45kmh driving as the forced air provides all the necessary cooling. Check electrics and both fan stages. normally only one cycles on then the second after a set temp but both should cycle on with the A/C. If you had a radiator issue it should be worse with driving than parked, Hope this helps.
