After almost 10 years, 100k, and 1000 posts, I traded in my 2000 Maxima SE this past week. Just wanted to say goodbye to the community. You guys have been great, and an indispensible resource for advice, TSB's, tutorials, etc. Not only have you (collectively) saved me thousands of dollars, but you also gave me the confidence to take on some car projects I would have never had the courage to embark on myself. Thank you.

what's the value they gave you for your maxima?

 

$2,600, which I was reasonably happy with.

Edmunds TMV dealer trade-in with my options + "average" condition is about $3,200.
details :
- needed 4 brakes, 4 rotors, 4 pads, 4 calipers
- needed suspension
- needed catalytic converter
- needed RHS airbag pre-tensioner
- had several areas of rust (Rochester, NY winters FTW)
- had 1 accident w/ ~$5,000 damage
- had aftermarket in-dash navi
- new alternator, updated ignition coils, updated engine mounts
- full service records

... and I sold it with snow tires on, so I still have the alloy's with <20k mile tires at home which are getting thrown on craigslist next week.

... and I saved ~$250 on taxes

To get it up to the private-party sale value, I would have had to spend a lot of my own time and money (esp. on the first four items in the list above)

 

Great replacement for the Max. Did you ever consider the 2010 Max?

 

These "goodbye" threads can be heartbreaking, because half the time they involve a collision. But in your case, this is all good.

I'm no fan of BMW's in general, but that interior design is undeniably gorgeous in two-tone. I wouldn't mind slipping into that each morning.

Good question....

I've been looking at newer cars for a while, since my Maxima was getting old. I have test-driven every generation of maxima including the latest out of pure curiousity (as I'm sure many here have). As for new cars, I also looked semi-seriously at the altima, accord v6 and acura TL-S.

I also kept my eye on some used car models, and eventually found this BMW. Fully loaded* 2008 335i, with 13k miles, impeccable history, certified pre-owned (6 year/100k warranty + roadside, 4 year/50k free maintenance + bmw assist). I basically STOLE it for 30k out the door.

An "equivalently" equipped new maxima would be closer to $40k, would depreciate faster, and would not perform anywhere remotely near what this car can do (the e90 335i is widely considered to be faster than the previous e46 M3). Nothing particular against the 2010 maxima, but given the price of the BMW the choice was easy.

Sounds like you made a great purchase. I agree - although the new Maximas are beautiful cars, when you're up in that price point, go for the luxury brand.

(Similar story - my dad's decision between a new Taurus SHO for $44k or a used 09 Lexus LS for $43K was easy. More power, more class: Lexus.)

I doubt if you'll find a Fiourum/community l;ike this one for the Beamer. Most Beamer drivers I know are the "Take it to the Dealer types"

I completely agree about the forum. I've poked around a little on the typical BMW sites, and they don't seem to be anywhere near as do-it-yourself as the maxima guys (especially on the newest models). It makes sense given that BMW warranties everything and provides free service for the first 4 years of the car's life (sucks if you just want some info on the car, since nobody is motivated to rip their car apart and take pictures). I did find a radar detector hard-wire tutorial which may be my first step.

Yeah, the turbos on this car are amazing. They are unbelievably smooth with very little lag.


P.S. Pulled up next to a GT-R at a stoplight the other day... even in this car, it was humbling
