Steering shifts left when gear change?

I'm driving my girl's 2000 auto GLE and it feels as if the steering wheel steers left during a gear change and then holds it. Off the line, the steering wheel will be straight and centered but for example, during the 3-4 gear change, it'll move to about the 11 o'clock position? Maybe not that bad but still noticeable. It'll only do it once until you slow back down to a stop.

I'm guessing it might be bad motor mounts as the car has a little over 200k miles. I checked the tranny fluid and it seems fine. Have any of you 5th gen guys have or heard of this problem?

Almost all FWD cars with out some form of LSD have a problem similar to what you are describing known as torque steer. Bad suspension components or engine mounts will make the symptoms worse. You probably want to jack things up and check your suspension bushings, you'll probably find a few things that could use replacement

I thought torque steer is more noticeable under heavy acceleration and steering will return back centered? This occurs under normal city driving and the steering wheel holds that change in directions until you slow down to a stop and realigns centered again.

Ok it wasn't clear that you were driving normally. In that case it is definitely a motor mount or suspension component. I would put my money on motor mount though

Try popping your hood, putting the car in drive and giving it a little gas while on the brakes. If you have a bad motor mount(s) the engine will rock around a little bit

Yep... it looks like that's the problem. Hmm, is easier/better to get poly inserts or just replace the mounts alone?

you have an auto right? I dont think those accept the inserts. If you are auto you have electronic motor mounts. I am pretty sure most people change those out for the regular motor mounts the manuals have. Might want to do a little searching on that though.

If you have a manual I would definitely change out the mounts instead of putting in inserts and then think about inserts in the new mounts if you want it stiffer

That's pretty cheap. I'm guessing the question is, do I replace all four or just the rear or do I even have to replace the sides or what?

Check out rockauto.com as well I have bought a few things from them over the years and they have had some quality parts for pretty cheep.

I would replace all 4 if you can afford it. If not start with the worst and work your way through them as you can afford it. I know all of mine could use replacing. Let us know how long and how difficult the swap out was.

i had the same problem and i found out through this site and troubleshooting that is was the motor mounts. I have found that it is better to replace things such as brakes, suspension parts, and in this case motor mounts all at once then a few parts at a time. I did my motor mounts myself i bought them from the dealer for like $486 for all four of them.
