Check engine light just came on..How bad?Costs?

So just got a maxima last friday, my 2nd. Drove it quite a bit with no problems until tuesday. I was coming home from the beach and noticed the check engine light came on. I do not do my own work and suck with cars so this worried me. I got it checked out and they said like "Evacc Emissions (Large)" Not sure exactly what that means. I need to get it inspected, will this be costly? I am guessing there is a leak in a vaccum hose some where?

Check you gas cap. Is it on correctly? Did you get gas before the light came on?

I got gas the day before? I did check the gas cap though because someone told me to. It was not tight all the way but was closed.

What I would do is make sure it's tight, reset the code, then see if it comes back. Maybe you'll get lucky.

yeah or autozone. Sometimes it is against policy but you can do it yourself. From the sounds of it you just left the gas cap loose. Don't worry to much.

Or you can always disconnect the battery.

I highly doubt it was just the gas cap but will check tomorow. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be if its not this?

Yea btw autozone probably wont reset the computer for you (sorry). I asked them once and they said no because it was against policy or something.

SES light is a single indicator for all the problems. Why not go someplace and actually read the code (s)? If the problem is already taken care of like loose gas cap ECU will reset the light by itself after certain number of trips. In my case it usually takes 3-4 days.

I wouldn't get too excited just yet. Many things will set off a check engine light, and lots of those things don't need to be fixed immediately. Check the "how to" procedure in the stickies for getting the light to flash the code at you. Then you can determine the problem, possible fixes, and cost.

They sell code readers at auto part stores that will read your codes and reset the light. They are less than $80 and are good to have.

My code reader book says P0455 is a gross leak. Unless you didn't even click the fuel cap when putting it on, I think it could be more than the cap. Time will tell if the light comes back on.

I dont think it was clicked spock. I could smell gas for a few days and was like wtf am i leaking??? just didnt think it would be the cap. After i tightened the cap the smell was gone so clearly not a gas leak. I looked up p0455 and many people said it was the same issue. My mustang doesnt do this , gas cover doesnt click much so just didnt think I was doing anything wrong

I had a P0455 and something else whatever it was at the time, it was the EVAP solenoid and canister. I swapped them from a junkyard car, code is long gone.

Not sure exactly what that means to be honest ha but im guessing mine was just the cap. I was only shooting this one code. It gets inspected tomorow so should be fine.

if the code stays gone, you're good, and that's all that matters!

Mine's pretty fussy about this. I make sure now that it clicks 4 times when tightening the cap.

I've had my SES turn on with this code in the middle of a 700mile drive. Took it to autozone, the guy laughed, tighten my gas cap, and he DID reset my SES light. Never came on again.
