Catback exhaust options?

Ladies and Gents,

Looking for options to replace my dieing stock exhaust on my 02' Max SE. Some catback system that is stainless, good quality and similar sound levels to stock.

No big a** fart cans sticking out the rear end either. Something that matches the "class" of the car.

Any ideas?

Brian Catts at Cattman Performance. Premier quality. Perfect fitment.

Don't go by his website... it hasn't been maintained in years. It seems he has all the business he needs word-of-mouth (so to speak.) In other words, you need to call him direct and let him help you on the phone. Great guy. Very patient and helpful.

Depending on how much you wanna spend, the Megan Racing catback is a good catback. If money is no option then cattman 3" all the way!!

Before posting this thread, I exchanged emails with Brian regarding his 2.5" catback system which was my first choice. Unfortunately he doesn't make them nor have anymore. I was quite disappointed. From all the reviews, it sounded like it was a rock solid and well proven exhaust system for the Max with near stock sound levels. I'm skeptical with the 3" system. It's more than I want to spend and I'm sure at a larger diameter, the sound levels will also be higher, possible droning at highway speeds. That's not what I'm looking for.

I also looked at CustomMaxima's exhaust but it seems "questionably" cheap and that big single tipped fart can does not belong, IMHO, on a Maxima.

So, I'm looking for other options.

I'll take a look at Megan. Thanks!

**Update: Well I definitely like the look and price of the Megan. Now to try and find a sound clip. Checking to Youtube....

For those who responded to my question with usable info (that's all but one), thanks! I think I may go with Megan. Listened to a bunch clips on Youtube and I like it. At $425, that's not a bad price considering I was budgeting $599 for the 2.5" Cattman.

Any negatives on Megan exhausts?

SoonerFan, anything??

Thanks again guys!

Really? Did he say why?

My guess is he's focusing on the 3" catback these days. Interesting move, because the 3" is hella loud.

Any aftermarket exhaust is gonna be louder than stock. If you want quiet, stick with an OEM muffler. If you want awesome, go with the Cattman 3", like me

To quote what he told me: "We haven't been selling enough of the 2.5" systems to make them regularly because the 3" system we're working on now has become so popular."

Again, disappointing.

Wow. Thanks for clarifying that.

I'll repeat for emphasis: the 3" Cattman sounds awesome, both behind the car and in the car. I had the good fortune to experience that just two days ago. But it is really, really loud.

The 2.5" Cattman is relatively quiet until you start pushing past 4 grand. In otherwords, with the 2.5" you can drive quiet or loud, depending on your driving behavior. Not so with the 3.0".

I can deal with a little more grunt or growl but some can be too much. From what I heard Cattman 2.5" had a nice deep tone. Megan sounds quite similar.

To each their own.

A little roar at high rpm when I want to play is completely fine. But when I'm cruising for any length of time, usually sitting between 2-2.5k, I want a low subtle tone. Any droning would drive me nuts, not to mention the wife and kids.

If that is your concern I would recommend going with a 2.5" system. Rochester is correct, the 3.0" with Headers, Y-pipe and FastCat is more or less loud all the time.

Would it be as loud coming from stock manifolds and y-pipe? I can't say first hand but I would bet that the volume would be less.

If you are sitting at 2-2.5K most of the time I find that is where my system makes the most drone.
I am going to be working on some sound deadening to try and quell the drone...but I don't think it will ever be a quiet system by any means.

The good thing may be that if many people are switching to a 3" system there could some used 2.5" systems coming onto the market....our very small market....

Clearly your not doing your research...... there is so many ppl with a 3" ita not really hard to find sounds clips.. not much louder than the 2.5

Yep, seen and heard lots of clips of both 2.5" and 3" exhausts.

Just comes down to what I want and don't want. I want quality, stainless and as quiet as possible without breaking the bank. I don't want to spend almost twice as much for something I don't need nor do I have any interest in buying.

Plain and simple! That's all the research I need to do.

Many sound clips, yes. But what matters most (to the OP) is the noise as heard (and felt) inside the car.

Hustler, drive a 5.5 Maxima with headers and a 3.0" Cattman cat-back, then report back. I did that a few days ago, and I personally have the Cattman 2.5" for direct comparison. The 3.0" is hella loud. It just is.

To the point MaximusTi made about possible reduced volume when matched with the OEM manifold and a y-pipe, that's possible... headers introduce a lot of rumble. But I can't say for experience.

Buy mine posted in the first reply. The clip is there, and it's really quiet. Even more so if you do not have headers, and for half the price of your current option.

That Megan cat-back looks nice. Nice bends. Shiny 3" dual-tips.

Seems like a good deal for a 2.5" setup, particularly if Cattman is out of the 2.5" game.

That was just MSRP direct from Megan. I received info on other sites with better prices.

Thanks for the offer but I really don't need headers yet. I'll replace them when it's required. I also want to stay away from the stock exhaust. I live in the Canadian winters where there's lots of road salt. Full stainless steel is what I need up here.

I can tell you from personal experiance that the Cattman 3" WITH the stock exhaust manifolds in place isn't TOO loud. It's noticeable but not obnoxious. I don't wanna say I was disappointed but I was surprised it wasn't louder when I first installed it. Apparently the "pre-cats" quiet our exhaust down quite a bit.

That's good to know. Glad you weighed in with that opinion.

What about your y-pipe? OEM or aftermarket?

Stock. I have a new Cattman Y-pipe that's been sitting in my basement for a while now, I just havent had the time to install it. Once my weekends settle down a little bit I'm gonna shop around for the price of an installation. However, from what I've read it gives the exhaust a nice deep tone, which I would think would only be a good thing when paired with the 3".

THAT'S (!!) the opinion I'm personally interested in. OEM manifold into a Cattman y-pipe and a Cattman 3.0" catback.

I hope to read about your y-pipe installation somewhere on the Org, Rhyno.

I recently just installed one of the ebay EVO2 knockoffs and just ordered a Cattman Y Pipe and will be installing that once I get it in the mail. I will let you know about the sound afterwards. I had a custom made one from one of the shady exhaust shops in the NY area before, and I picked one of the smallest pipes and it was still loud, the ebay one with a silencer is actually better. Well, its a little hard for me to tell exactly right now, because my ghetto one had broken off before I replaced it, so it was definitely louder than before. And my Y pipe I think in the flex section is going and is really loud too, but we'll see what happens after I install the Y pipe.
