For those of you that want to keep your aluminum looking glossy and shiny and protect it from the salt... Use a product called simichrome. It's a very light polish with little to no abrasive. It goes on like a wax and keeps all liquids off. It also seals it against the oxygen so it doesn't oxidize.

That was taken in March of 05 (error on my camera date obviously), 3 months after the headers were put on ... You should see them now. So, yeah that's the cleanest it's ever been, well, been captured on camera anyhow.

I'm sure there's way to keep them semi clean ... maybe remove, clean, reinstall.

Does that leave permanent protection? I was looking for something like that when I did my motor. I ended up just wire brushing off the oxidation and then clear-coating the aluminum. So far its still looking good.

It certainly is. It's also decidedly not the engine bay.

This has turned into a "look at me" thread... of which I'm just as much to blame, although mine were offered in the context of the original premise.

Looking at your show car, it seems like many of those bolts are chrome, even the little ones. Is that right?

How did you do that? For example, chrome engine cover bolts might look pretty awesome.

And speaking of shiny, I went out to my car last night for 10 min with some 400grit sandpaper and some aluminum polish and tried polishing a small area on my IM. It worked great and really isn't that hard. Now I'm gonna take it off and polish the whole thing. Probably can't get around to it til next week, but I'm pretty excited about it. It's gonna look really good

If you're going to remove it entirely, why not take it somewhere to have it bead-blasted (or sand-blasted, or whatever they call it)? Intake plenum, too.

When I was a kid, I had braided sleeves on the hoses of my small-block. Not sure how that would look in the Maxima. Plus, they were a total PITA to keep clean.

The son-a-***** is all done too. I am picking it up later this week. I still want to tidy up the bay and get it detailed. Meanwhile, seat and harnesses are going in thsi weekend.

This Max will finally be ready by the end of the month .

I want it to look like THIS except w/ my black engine cover. It's gonna be sexy.

i think he said he was taking it off to polish it. sand/bead blasting does not equal"polished"...

I've also seen some nice reinforced silicone hoses on ebay. They look better than the stocks and are available in a few different colors.

Because of this thread, I started poking around chroming services. Getting the UIM professionally chromed (polished, etched, plated and chromed) would be in the range of $250 +shipping. I'm not going to do it myself, but that seems somewhat reasonable, I think.

Chromed intake would look awesome.

I'm of a mind that chrome belongs under the hood. Not so much on the outside of the car.

Yeah, or I can spend $20 on sandpaper and polish and do it myself and it'll look just as good. Plus, I'll have the satisfaction of doing it myself. I like that.

By all means, jowo9. I'm not suggesting you chrome the UIM. Just sharing the info as I find it. Point in fact, I'd like it if you took before/after photos on what you're going to do here. Because what you're doing with your UIM is more than me right now (which is nothing).

I greatly appreciate it and really like what you have contributed to this thread Rochester my last post should have said something about how I find it interesting to know you can have it chromed or that price. I just got distracted and posted quickly.

Without my engine cover, I'm just as engine-dirty as the next guy. I could stand to see my UIM a little cleaner. Of course, without my engine cover you can clearly see my phenolic spacers. But I'm not bragging. No-o-o

Hmm. I really should tuck that VIAS solenoid away somewhere unobtrusive, but I like having the engine cover on.

i bought another IM (upper and lower collectors) from someone on here...that way I could take my time and still be able to drive the car...when I sold the car, I put the stock one back on and sold the polished one

then I'm not bragging when I say I was the first one that Aaron sold them to when they were complete...had them for 2 weeks before they offically went on sale...went to a couple local meets to adveretise
