Opinions on Megan Racing springs?

I'd like to improve my car's handling a bit, and get rid of the terrible dive and squat under braking and acceleration. After some research, I've come to the conclusion that the best handling springs are Eibachs, closely followed by H&Rs.

I also came across Megan Racing lowering springs, and judging by their specs, they seem pretty good. And at less than half the price of Eibachs or H&Rs ($108) they're pretty tempting. They don't drop the car so low that they wreck the suspension geometry either (1.6"F and 1.5"R). My question is, does anyone have these springs installed on their car? Taken a ride in a Maxima with them, perhaps? How is the ride with them?

Another thing that gives me some concern about the Megan Racing springs is the spring rate. It's considerably higher than most, at 280F and 230R. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I heard mixed reviews about them from the few people that have them, some love them while others hate them. I'm strongly considering getting them also, but not many people have them on their maximas

1.6 front and 1.5 rear is like having H-tech fronts and Progress rears

^ Thanks for the input. I guess I'll look up reviews of H-Tech and Progress springs. If nobody posts anything terrible about the Megan springs like "my car feels like a pogo stick!" I'll order them today.

^I looked up the spring rates and the Megan springs compare to the Progress and h-techs like this (thanks to irish44j and DrKlop for the info)

Progress rears -- 250 lbs (but maybe from 179 - 285)
H-Tech fronts -- 180 lbs

im getting some progress springs. i want a high rate like the stock springs on my old 4th gen SE (which i believe where around 250).

i know a guy that has some megans on his integra. he is taking them of because he says the ride "springy" (no pun intended) but again thats on a different car so take it for what its worth

^ That doesn't sound good if he had stiffer shocks and the ride was still bouncy... Hopefully it'll be different on a Maxima.

^Spoke to a friend that had these on a different car, they are a stiff spring and the handling was great.

I would only pair these springs with Illuminas

^ I guess it'll be a while until I get them installed then, because illuminas will require a bit of saving up.

^ Haha, yeah. I was hoping I could manage the stock shocks for a while since the Megans are a pretty mild drop.

You could try it, I know people that are on S-techs with stock struts with no problems. I wouldn't test my luck with any springs that drop lower then the H&Rs, but who knows with the Megan's high spring rate it might not be so bad.

Does $300 sound like a good installation price, or is that too high?

Is that to install just the springs onto old struts or with new struts?
Seems a little high compared to the prices I can get it done for.

I just ordered the springs, so I guess I'll be this forum's guinea pig. If the ride sucks with my stock struts, I'll order some GR-2s.

Was it a chain mechanic like Meineke or something?

SWEET!!!!!

Btw if you don't mind me asking, how many miles do you have on your stock struts?

I wouldn't take my car to any chain mechanic for any performance related work lol

^ My car had 156,000 miles on it when I bought it in January, and the struts look pretty new, so I'd say they have 3,000 miles on them now since I'm at 159,000. Chain mechanics aren't good? I think the Meineke in my area is pretty decent. Back when I had my Celica, I got my exhaust installed there and their workmanship was pretty good. I found a walkthrough for installing springs and shocks a while ago, so I think I'm gonna try installing them myself.

Ok, cool, I'm at just over 100k with original struts lol

I wouldn't trust chain mechanics around me for suspension type jobs, can't really compare a suspension install to an exhaust though.

Let us know how the ride is with the high spring rate lol

Btw how much were they shipped? like $140?

I had a really busy weekend, so I was only able to install the front springs.

Here's my opinion so far: they're great! The ride is as good, if not better than stock. It feels like what the SE suspension should have felt like in the first place.

Even though I used my stock struts (while installing the springs I realized that my passenger side front strut is blown. I could fully compress it by hand) the ride is very controlled with absolutely no bouciness. It just feels very controlled and firm. One annoying thing is that the springs don't come with isolators for where it contacts the spring perch. I had to reuse my stock ones.

My front end is making all sorts of weird noises now, but I'll troubleshoot that next weekend.

^ You'll love them. I wish the drop was a little more aggressive, but that would wreck the suspension geometry so I think the Megan Racing springs are a good compromise.

I got on the highway for the first time after installing my springs, and my car sounded like a roller coaster! It was terrible. When I got home I found that all of my driver's side front lug nuts and 2 of the 3 upper strut mount bolts had loosened themselves. That was weird since all of the passenger side bolts were fine. So I tightened the lug nuts, and this happened:

Very strange, since I didn't even use my impact wrench. How can I replace the stud?

From what I've heard you can't expect this from Megan

well, but if Eibachs do that, how much more likely are megans? For the 240sx I heard their tension rods and control arms were notorious for snapping.... I mean the price difference is ridiculously low to go with a top notch brand. Plus you always find em used in the classifieds....

I found the Megans for less than half the price of Eibach or H&R springs, and I always thought Megan Racing made quality products. I know you can't really compare an exhaust to suspension parts, but their cat back is really high quality.

Remove caliper, remove brake disk. Insert hammer on old stud. Insert new stud. Reassemble, profit.
