Time for a new transmission. How much should I expect to pay?
Whats up guys....
Jumped in the car this morning threw into reverse and nothing.....just revving.
Did a search and it seems that even if I push it out my driveway and get it to where I wont need reverse 1st and 2nd gear will go next soon. What should I expect to pay for a new tranny ??? rebuilt??? AAMCO???? Im in central NJ.

www.car-part.com
A 6MT swap is very labor intensive (unlike the relative 4th gen swap) and you'll need a new ECU. A bit pricey especially if you just want to get it back on the road.
I would look into a used unit from the website above, preferably in Colorado or another Mountain state. This would ensure that only 70-80% of the cars actual power was ever reaching the ground (high altitude affects power output).

As a fellow AT driver...this has happened to me twice. As already mentioned car-part.com is your friend. I paid $350 delivered for an 03 tranny with 5000 miles on it and a 1 year warranty, i figured that was too good to pass up.

it went bad overnight w/o any warnings? Under normal circumstances transmissions usually show signs of wear before finally crapping out. I would check for misc sensor problems first before jumping the gun....

Its slipping for a while now 2yrs....wouldnt get out first till revving realy high then second would thump in.

I wouldn't even consider that. Nothing but a bunch of franchise scammers.
AAMCO lawsuits gave me over 6000 hits on Google.

2002MaxNJ-honestly, I wouldn't even consider having an import transmission rebuilt, no one seems to have the first clue how to do it right, or they simply replace the clutch packs without going through the valve body, torque converter, etc. Like the other suggested, look for the lowest mileage used transmission you can find. Either swap it in yourself or find an independent repair shop who has experience with transmission installs, although not necessarily a transmission shop. Make sure they will flush out the ATF coolant lines prior to installing the replacement transmission.

My .02
I've been experiencing similar issues with my car, which at first felt as though my tranny was slipping. Now my car does did reverse and drive so thats a big difference, but doesn't necassarily take my tip out of the equation. For example i'd drive, and my transmission would shift fine, but all of a sudden my car neutralizes and begins to rev as though it is slipping. I would pull over park within a minute drive and the transmission would shift fine.
Took it to a Transmission shop (Eagle Transmission), and they hooked up their comp while reproducing the issue and came up with P1574 & P0720. Note my CEL never turned on so these codes were ones that lingered in the back that only specialized (expensive) comps could pick up. They also dropped the pan to ensure that there weren't any other symptoms of the transmisison going faulty. So the moral is the transmission wasn't the problem even when everyhting felt so, but rather the revolution(Speed) sensor which sits on the transmission.
My opinion before dropping a grand is check the tranny dip stick and smell for burnt oil, or have it either analyzed by a transmission shop or comp for any 'ghost' codes.

I changed my trans fluid....and i overfilled it...drained all out, and put it back in ( a reduced amount) and after driving, it was bone dry...put some in last night, still looked like levels went no where. in the morning, it seemed overfull, and after driving, the levels were normal...but the car is driving a little harsh...any clues ?

DO NOT GO TO AAMCO. I went there for my 2000 Maxima SE and they diagnosed I needed a new tranny and they already had it out. They wanted to charge $750 to take the tranny out and put it back in. I had to find another transmission so they could put it in instead and they put on a cheap clutch, when they said it would be stock Nissan, and filled it with too thick of transmission fluid. It ran like crap and when I went back they said I needed another transmission, this one is bad.
Went to my buddy, who is a 120 miles away but is a nissan service tech, and he replaced the fluid and put a stock clutch in and the transmission has never felt so good.

I just bought an '00 SE 5spd and I'm thinking about replacing my high-mileage (176k) tranny that has some whine in low gears and doesn't always go into 1st after starting up. Was thinking of getting a used tranny off car-part.com rather than rebuilding which I've had bad luck with in the past with other vehicles. I have a few questions as to which tranny to get, though.
1) how can I tell if my car has the LSD or not? I've heard you can find out by decoding the VIN, but I can't find a working VIN decoder anywhere (and yes, I've searched)
2) is the '00 model year transmission the only direct swap, or can I go with a tranny that has an LSD, such as the '01 anniversary edition?
3) if a tranny is listed has having a "non-locking diff" does that mean it has an LSD?
thanks in advance

If there is a "V" anywhere in your tranny code, then yes you do.

Its like this..
non locking.... non LSD
1....... The drivers side where the axle comes out will have "bulge"... Non LSD is basically flat..... VIN gives you an idea, but a visual tells you proof positive whats there.... My 2 cents!!
thanks in advance

I'd like to find out which transmissions are direct bolt-ins for my car. Can I take a 5th gen 5 spd w/LSD and swap it for my tranny without any further work? What about a 5.5 gen 6 spd? Although if I go that route I'll probably just go all out and get a VQ35 as well.
As far as the latter route, whole new bag'o'worms.

Edit: after checking again it looks like the only way to get a VLSD 5SPD off of car-part is to go for the 20th anniversary model and that raises the price dramatically. You can get a 6 SPD HLSD for the same price or maybe less.
