Remote Starter for Manual Transmission (6-speed)
Remote Starter for Manual Transmission (6-speed)
Guys I need help. I can find almost zero information on the web about this stuff.
I'm in Kansas City and I have a 2002 6-speed. I've wanted a remote starter for as long as I remember.
I've done all kinds of research and searching, just can't find any good information.
What I want is a remote starter, w/ a 2 way pager fob, 2000ft+ range and manual transmission capable.
There is a pretty reputable installer here that was going to install a Crimestopper RS-7 on my car for $325 for everything. Which is reasonable. And I almost did it but the manual transmission is ridiculous.
The crimestopper protocol is this: Park, pull out emergency brake, while holding foot brake, put car in neutral, release clutch, push remote starter button on remote, get out of car, shut door, WAIT 10 seconds, hit lock button.
That is the ONLY way the car will start after you've left it. It's just excessive.
I do NOT want a car that will start in gear, so the RS must have a manual tranny protocol, I don't want to run over a kid.
Do any of you have on your car currently a RS system that meet's my criteria? Or do you recommend something that will work for me?
He recommended a Code Alarm 5051MT (it's new and not even sold in stores yet) but the remote is junk looking and only has a 1000ft range.
Anyone?

Yep its something similar to that but I don't think you have to wait 10 seconds to lock it after the procedure. Also if you open a door before remote starting it, you'd have to do the procedure again.
Also that said procedure before wouldn't really totally stop you from starting the car in gear =/

Manual Transmission
If the vehicle has a manual transmission the proper steps must be followed
before leaving the parked vehicle or the remote start feature is
disabled.
1. Make sure the engine is running and the doors on the vehicle are
closed.
2. Put the transmission in neutral.
3. Press on the brake in the vehicle.
4. Apply the emergency brake.
5. Release the brake.
Note: Pressing the brake pedal again after this step will disable the
remote start feature.
6. Within 15 seconds activate the remote start from the remote.
7. The parking lights flash 5-times confirming that the remote start is
active. If the parking lights do not flash 5-times, then repeat steps
1 - 6.
8. Turn off the ignition (the car stays running when key is turned off).
9. Exit the vehicle
10. Arm the alarm (the vehicle should shut off when arming the system).
You can now remote start the vehicle. If a door is opened or the alarm
is triggered before the next remote start activation the system will not remote start.

Apart from the "wait 10 seconds" part, everything else makes sense. Since the car has no neutral-safety switch, the remote starter brain has no direct way of knowing if your car is in neutral or not. The sequence essentially assures that the car could not be in the gear if the sequence was followed exactly. If any step was omitted, there is a chance that the car could be in gear. For example, you can open the passenger door and could bump the lever and put the car in gear.
Find out if the "wait 10 seconds" step is really necessary. If it is not, then I am sure you would get used to the remote start sequence and will become second nature.

Still haven't been able to find a good 2 way paging remote starter. The crimestopper version is good but you have a 10 second wait protocol after you get out of the car. It's a little ridiculous.
The viper versions are nice but $600 installed is RIDICULOUS.

These refurbs are also decent, I've had one on my maxima for 8 months with no real problems.

Remote starter on a manual is a bit ridiculous IMO. If you want it you should be willing to deal with the slight inconvenience of running through a protocol to ensure the car will not be started remotely while in gear...
I just ordered the Viper 5901 from the website that Lexus recommended. I've found a local reliable installer that will do it for $110 plus the cost of the bypass. A DEAL IMO. It was $208 shipped.
Thanks guys. Ready to get this done!

This guy comes to you too! And Kansas City is spread out. It's definitely a deal.
This looks like a good one, same as a viper, they are both made by DEI. You should be able to find someone to install it for about $100. I highly reccomend having it professionaly installed.

After just replacing my 6mt transmission, came across this:the switch for reverse lights is on top of the transmission. there is another switch on the back of the transmission, right under the shifter mechanism. according to mitchel online, it's called a "neutral switch". when you take the shifter mechanism out of the transmission, it is clear that the switch is indeed related to the shifter. all that's left is a test with a voltmeter to see if it is closed or open ONLY in neutral and the oposite in any other gear. if that is what the switch does, an automatic transmission remote start system should work! you should be able to wire the remote starter to bypass the clutch switch and use the neutral switch (but leave the clutch switch intact for when starting normally.)
I have a compustar installed in my 03 manual - althought something is wrong with the connect somewhere with all the wiring I have done and battery changes etc. But when it was working it was the same proceedures as above but I dont remember having to wait for anything - I recommend them - look into the new drone apps to if you have an iphone - iphone is pretty much used as the 2 way pager - have fun
remote starters for manuals.

Even Better:

Connect the neutral safety wire from remote starter to pin 44(green/white?).
Here is some info from viper 5701 manual.

Then I suppose you could install on a manual while keeping it in automatic mode.

When I installed my remote starter it was setup for manual transmission. It had all those dumb steps on exit. Instead I cut a wire and/or moved a jumper wire so it was set up for automatics. I installed the ground wire to the neutral safety switch so it only starts in neutral. No more rain dance to start the car.

Lexus,
Check out page EC-667-669, there is a component description AND a complete wiring diagram.
Page 669 should be all the info my installer needs to get this done, ASSUMING that this switch does what we expect it to do.
