Weird problems.....

Okay so tonite I was driving....I just got on the highway, all of a sudden my car sputters and jerks like I was out of gas; i look down and my tachometer just stopped working completely. I pull over and turn the car off. I try to start it back up and it does want to start. After multiple attempts it finally starts back up. Tachometer still doesnt work while driving. So I turn around and drive home.....eventually at some point it started working again....but at low speeds (2K rpm) it jerks and the tach jumps a little. I came to a traffic light and waited for it to turn green...once it did...i attempted to go but the car didnt move. It just revved up. I had to shift the car down the D1 and back up to D again for it to work.

Not sure if its transmission related, engine related or an electrical problem. I just put in another transmission sooooo.

TCM? Or the actual transmission may be shot.

I'll take a wild shot in the dark, only because I have had a failing alternator do it to me ... when you said you were at the lights waiting to go and when you applied the gas the engine only revved up without moving the car which was a classic for the failing alternator. You also stated very hard to restart another classic alternator problem and low battery power level. The main difference in my case vs. yours my dash board would lite up like a Christmas tree, not the SES light but the ABS/TCS lights would come on. When I had the charging system checked my alternator was only putting out 6 volts, worth a try to have the charging system checked given the colder temps are here.

If your tach was at zero, but the engine was running, it sounds like electrical or a sensor.
In the "old days" it meant your points collapsed, not sure where I would look for it in a Max
