underdrive pulley break crankshaft???

i just installed a underdrive pulley on my 2k1automax. when i removed the stock pulley i noticed a rubber dampener in the middle of pulley. does this dampener take out vibration when car is shut off.(meaning does it give crank to drive belt accessary slack?) is their any chance that this solid pulley will hurt my engine? if their is i'll take it right off. anyone have any problems????

No. The crank pulley is not used as a balancer or damper for the crankshaft at all.

Did you accidentally take off the seal?

thats what it sounds like... if the crankshaft seal came off, you might as well replace it with a new one... go get one from the parts dept.... it's cheap :)

BigDogJonx 12-18-2001 07:41 PM

yeah I agree with UMD, should be any problems unless you already removed or have a destroyed/old crank shaft seal.

i didnot remove the seal! if you look at the pulley from the side you will see a hole in the center and the ridges for the belts. , between the ridges and the center hole their is rubber inside the dampener.i think it absorbes shock.take a look at stock pulley and see....

I think that was there cause maybe they decided they wanted to do a shaft screw and decided not to. I dont know, sorry

I've pulled off and put the stock pulley on many times and have never seen a rubber piece in the center hole.

its not in the center hole , but built into the casting......maybe only 2k1 has this....btw cali spec. put it this way if the rubber broke the pulley would be in two pieces ( belt drive surface and center piece)

What's up Big Dog? I have a question for you...do you have a 5 speed or an automatic? My guess is you have a 5 speed. Reason i ask is because i heard that installing a UDP on an automatic is harder than it is on a 5 speed. Take care. :)

he has an auto... installing the UDP is not too tough. You need to be patient with the tensioners and to break the bolt off, you will need to use the starter trick....

These are pics of the stock crank pulley from my '99 Maxima. I thought what you were describing was the oil seal, but after reading further, I don't know what you're talking about!

That link looks screwy. Sorry. Just go to http://www.greghome.com

and then go to the power modifications section, then UDP. You will see the pics there.

I think we've been through this several times.

The rubber he's talking about is not the seal. There is an area with rubber. My recollection from talking to UDP when I put mine on (think it is on their site too) is thatrubber is there to reduce tortional force. However, the diameter of the UDP is smaller so there is no need for the rubber. It is not a harmonic dampener.

Yeap just like Nauman said, hehhe (he was there to help on the UDP install)

The only part that is hard is loosening the tension stop bolts. Those bolts are against the wall of the engine compartment and does not leave much room for your hands, need small hands. Once you got that done, you have it made.

The bolt on the actual crankshaft can be removed by the start trick, put a breaker bar on that bolt and put the breakbar again the lower suspension brace, "blimp" the starter from the inside and you will know that you "broke" the bolt.

Simple.
