Rod knock or piston slap when starting car in cold weather?

I have owned the car since I bought it new in 1999 and this morning when I turned on the car, my starter stayed open and the engine had some slapping or rapid fire knocking that lasted about 3 seconds. This is the first time I have had this so it is a little surprising.

The car has about 142,000 miles, overheated recently, and there was oil on the threads of my spark plugs.

Do I need to worry or fix something?

Might be caused by the cam gear.

Yeah, it's the 1-second rattle, probably not related to the oil on the plugs.
