Maxima not starting. Lame..

Well I came back from my 100 mile drive last night, and this morning when I was going to head out to Guitar Center, went to go start up the max per normal routine, and it just kept turning over. No start at all.

Took out a few of the spark plugs and they appeared to be fine.

The air filter was disgustingly black and had pine needles and **** in it, so I replaced that thinking it would solve my problems.

Put a new filter in, but still the same deal.

When I turn the key, it turns over like it normally does, but it's just not starting, so I'm guessing it's not an electrically related problem, because the radio can stay on/lights/ all that.

I was seeing if any of you guys could give me a few culprits as to the many possible reasons this is happening.

Oh and I put $20 in the tank the night before, so there's gas in the tank.

Thanks alot

If your air filter was that bad, did you check your fuel filter?

Was thinking possibly the fuel filter/fuel/pump and all that.

I'll check out the CPS in the morning.

Of course this all decides to happen at the same time. On top of a tranny leak, bad idler pulley, broken tensioner, broken muffler/intermediate muffler, and o2 sensor or the cat is reading bad.

Starting to lose faith in the maximas

My buddy who owns the shop I work on my car at and I noticed something unusual...over the last few weeks, as the weather has gotten considerably colder, he's seen a sudden spike in people coming in with bad CPS on all makes/models of cars.

Coincedence? Maybe. But it makes you wonder if maybe there's something in the CPS that can be damaged by sudden changes in temperature.

Hm, the cps' going bad due to weather changes is an interesting theory.

How can I tell if my cps is bad?

I had the same problem for a long time. Finally found out what the problem REALLY is.

It was a bad ground problem. There was excessive corrosion between the mating surfaces of the transmission housing and engine itself. The real fix is to disconnect the two, clean the surfaces and re-mate them back together. That is quite a bit of work so, instead, my mechanic installed 2 new ground leads and the problem is now fixed! It now starts great! My performance was suffering also because of a weak spark but now it runs very strong.

I did a lot of research to find the problem and just told my mechanic what to look for. I suspected all those other things (CPS, fuel filter, etc.) but this was the real problem. Hope this helps.

I was thinking about the grounding issue in relationship to another current thread where the owner had something like 5 or 6 codes in the same week. Maybe a bad ground is causing them all.
