2k2 Navigation only working in the northeast?

I have a 2k2 SE with Navigation. One of the reasons I wanted navigation was because I travel. I live in Philly and I went to South Carolina for the week. On the way to SC, I was using the Navigation and it stopped working right at the Southern Virgina State Line. I thought it was just the GPS or something. Then I was looking around on the screen and had no streets. After messing around, the navigation only works from the virgina state line to boston, and NJ to Ohio (Northeast area)

Did anyone else notice this? How do I get the whole US? Do I need more CD's or something?

There are around 9 discs that cover the country. You can purchase them via Nissan dealer or this web site:

http://www715.vwh1.net/zenrin/pr_nissanmca.html

I was told a version with just major highways and freeways would be released for all of US Q1 or Q2 next year.

yeap this is always the case in most cars. Most likely they are not using the DVD discs, probably using standard CDROM discs. If it was a DVD disc, you can get the whole US of A in one disc.

Figures. Nissan didn't go with the DVD based Navigation...

I've seen the Nav unit and it looks nice. But, would have been nice if they went with DVD.

It was common knowledge that Nissan put a CD Based Navi in the car and that you would need to purhcase the different regions when traveling. If you look on the case the Navi CD came in you will see which region code you have. I live in Texas and have the CD for my region.

I talked about this before and it can be done. If people from the various regions would get together and make images or zips of the CD's we could share them with everyone and not have to fork over the $120 for each regional CD.

Thanks for the info. I did not know if there were more discs out there. Nissans Navi kinda stinks, compared to the DVD ones. I heard from my dealer that the cd cost something like $200. If there are 9 cds, than navigation could be very expensive.

Hi,

I live in the NY area, and if you look at how the bastards split up the NorthEast you would see that I actually have to possess THREE cds to get the coverage I really want. They even split NY state in HALF!!!!!! For the frigging $2000 you spend on that system they should give you all the CDs you want.

I am ALL FOR copying these CDs and trading them around with others who have the other northeast coverage areas. I do not even have my car yet, but one question I have - are the MCA cds readable in IBM PC format?

Well... CloneCD (with the right drive) will copy pretty much anything even if it isn't a recognizable data format.

i agree, it's funny how many people don't know these common knowledges and act like they've discovered it. if you were spending $2000+ on something i would hope you'd know what it does and doesn't.

are the navi discs in the maxima same as the ones in the I30? cuz i have a california/nevada disc for my i30.

You know, it might be worth searching your Nissan manual for an End-Use License Agreement (EULA) on that sofware. I wonder if Nissan actually included it in something you signed or implied it...might be a safe copy. They should have included a EULA which restricted redistribution, but in a proprietary system, sometimes they don't think about this as much.

The biggest thing that bothered me about my decision to buy a 2001 instead of waiting for a 2002 was not having the NAV. But after seeing the limitations of the NAV I don't feel so bad.

I actually don't see those limitations with mine. Of course I live in MCA2 which has quite a big area... any further other than California I fly anyway. I have a thing for Touchscreens so I had to have it in my Max... of course..I was one of those who picked up one of those surplus 3Com Audrey's off of Tigerdirect as well.

It is definitely a conversation piece for those riders who don't care much about cars but have an interest in electronics. Like I've said before... It would've been nice if it was DVD based... but I feel like it was worth it for me. If nothing else you can use the touch screen CD player for the tunes :-)

I thought about that...it didn't matter to me that the 02 is .5 sec faster than my 01, also my 01 engine is proven and the new one is not.

Both cars are nice, but I'm happy with mine.

Merry Christmas,
Jay

The easiest way to for everyone to share the map CDs is to rip the CD into an ISO image file. That file can be posted aywhere for people to download and burn back to CD. Just search on google to find ways of making the ISO image. If you have Windows XP there are a few very slick freeware programs that allow you to create the ISO image directly in the OS.
