260 Hp > 255 Hp

Before the 2002 Maxima actually showed up in dealerships, its 3.5 liter engine was being described as producing 260 HP. But it turns out the engine maxes out at 255 HP (240 HP in the new Altima). Anybody know what caused the 5 HP reduction in the Maxima?

I think the official word was "overestimates by engineering" so the marketing department was blaming engineering.

But I think what really happened was that engineering was saying "NFW" and marketing went on their "rah rah rah" PR blitz and then when engineering came back with the final numbers they said "we tolda ya so, dim wits" but somebody had to take the fall, and marketing wouldn't want to look bad since they represent the company so it got dumped on engineering.

At least this is my theory (in defense of engineers since I am one - we're always conservative in our estimates. Marketers are always optimistic so the story didn't jive with me)

The production version of the Maxima has a slightly more restrictive exhaust then Nissan originally thought it would, and as used in the pre-production versions that were tested in Japan.

This subject has been hashed over many times.

Actually, Nissan engineers are bad A$$. They made the VQ and the GTR and everything thats wonderful about Nissan engines. Its their design team that needs to be shot.

Actually it's their marketers that need to be shot.

"Oh, there's no market for the Skyline for the US. But here, have an Infiniti G35 which is nothing like it but will compete nicely with the Lexus GS and BMW 5-series that I know you're not interested in anyways..."

Just gimme a REAL R34 dammit!!!!!

And all this time I've thought it was mostly the Service(?) Departments that needed to be shot.

do u guy still remember when the new miata came out at the beginning of 2k1, they said it had 155HP..but turn out that they got that number in Jap but the engine can't pass the test in US..so, they cuted the HP back to 140(??) so they can sell in US. maybe Maxima had the same problem...

Agreed. Production tolerances will probably result in some engines being 5 hp stronger than others anyway. Only luck of the draw gets you a strong one.

I thought I heard that the I35 had the 260 in it and they gave it to that for one thing that the more pricey version of the max had another advantage? No?

No the I30 was 5 HP more powerful, not true for the I35 though.

Bottom Line When the 3rd Gen had 160-190hp it was a great car, when the 4th gen had 190hp this was a great car, when the 5th gen had 222hp it was a great car, When the AE got 227hp this was a great car and now with 255hp it is a great car. If you guys really care about the 5 extra horses get a K&N filter and that will give it to ya.
