Wrapping things in carbon fiber vinyl

Couldn't find paint to make my dash kit match my TE interior so I've decided to go with some carbon fiber vinyl instead. I've done quite a few pieces but it'll all be put together in about two weeks or so when my amp arrives.

Figured why not share in case anyone else is interested or wanted to see how it looks. Here's the center vent to get the ball rolling..

REAL 3M CF

Ebay '3m' CF --> leaves residue, just looks really weird, harder to put on

I remember that conversation.

I not sure how I feel about CF wrap on interior parts, but luvlexus101 sure does have an eye for detail.

Looking forward to seeing this dash when it gets put back together.

In for installed pics, looks like you got it nice and tight
I am not usually a fan of fake CF, but that stuff doesn't look too bad from the pics.

Its hard too tell from the pictures, but does it have any depth in the appearance? Usually I dislike fake CF because it looks like fake CF, however from the pictures this looks really nice.

Well done, Very Audi-ish.

Good point, that's why I always hated fake CF, cause it looks like a picture, love to hear whether this has that depth to it, it certainly looks like it does to some extent but pics can be very deceiving.

Little update, apparently the shifter trim from an i35 doesn't fit on our maximas so I'm waiting to get some more cf vinyl to finish that part off, for now here's a bad cellphone pic. Also led'd the fan controls.

Looking decent ^. Get out that fancy digital camera for us! In for close ups.

How is the appearance of depth in person?

And I freaking hate that stepped gap between the vents and the double din trim... I see it every day, one of these days Ill get the GLE kit.

That looks really good, I got some ebay stuff and there was no way to wrap it around the vents because of all the curves and edges! Having tried this myself, I have no idea how you wrapped it on that vents so clean and nice!

I don't want to jack this thread but I have some similiar stuff for sale as well. Not 3M. Left over from a previous project. It's the fabric that I guess you guys have seen before. Here's a Z console done with it. Contact me if interested.

Haha that there is the result of 4 separate attempts till I got it figured out, will take some real pics tomorrow, getting more cf on tuesday is finish it all off.

As far the 'depth' I'd say its pretty good, I love the way the light reflects off it even from outside

So I'm guessing you put a sheet of the vinyl over the whole piece and laid it down, then trimmed off the excess and openings/slots? How did you manage to not get wrinkles or overlapping on the edges?

Yep it doesn't wrinkle if you stretch it around well

You even managed to line up the stripes pretty good. I'd really like to see this in person next time you're in town.

(The shifter plate seems like overkill, IMO.)

Thanks Rochester, not sure when next trip there will be, as gas prices dont look too roadtrip friendly haha, but I really want to get that shifter plate done since mine was a bit scratched up, on another note I could have just painted it.

Springtime would be far better, anyway. Kind of hard to show off your car while it's covered in salt & crap, and we're both shivering in the cold.

I don't have a heated garage.

Very nice man. Did you actually manage to get the thin trim edge on the ACC?

I agree with Rochester though about the shifter trim, that would look amazing if it were stock, just a little offset to the CF.

All in all really clean work man!

Thanks man, I really tried to get the smaller edge but it wasn't working out although you wouldn't really notice since I sprayed it black before putting on the vinyl. Same on the vent and shifter trim.

I saw somewhere silver cf etc, be interesting if someone did some sorta tasteful combo, could be really awesome or horrible.

Btw I got the vent edge and dash kit edge lined up with some superglue, hella flush now!

Well, in this case that would be the image of CF, printed on vinyl adhesive sheets. But yes, CF has a neat look.

Oh yeah man, it's SO hard trying to keep my car clean . I almost wash it every week, and 2 days later, covered again. And don't forget me! I'd be there too!
