Transmission problem? Or somthing else?

I have a 2000 maxima se that is manual. I tried searching the web for my problem but couldn't find anything quite like it. The problem I am having is that my front end (possibly tranny) is making a verry loud grinding/ groaning sound. This only happens when I am accelrating or delcelerating, and i can usually only hear it in gears 1,the beginning of 2nd, and the beginning of 3rd. If i throw it in second once i get past around 3k rpms it is faint. but in first gear It is not faint. Also when the car is not moving it makes no noises i can hear. When moving and the clutch pedal is down the noise stops. It is getting verry loud. Car still drives fine accelerates normal (becides the noise) and shifts good. Im thinking it is a berring that needs to be replaced... Which is very costly concidering the car is only worth 2k says kbb... Anyone have any ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like $500 is about the going price for a used one from a salvage yard. Any idea on installation costs? I'm guessing $800-1000?

How's your motor mounts? If your motor mounts are toast and your engine is sagging, it will put a lot of unwanted stress on your gearbox resulting in premature wear as well as death to the gearbox. Check the mounts before you go condemning the tranny.

what other bushing/ suspension factors would play into transmission problems? I just had a wheel hub/ bearing replaced today after a loooooong time of driving with it bad, it got to a point where it was making horrific grinding noises. I have been noticing a slip in the automatic transmission recently, and some tranny fluid on the bottom of the pan. Is it possible that the bad wheel bearing caused the driveshaft to be pulled from the tranny causing a leak/ tranny problems? any thoughts are appreciated
