I have a beige (whatever it's called) 2002 Maxima GLE and recently changed the tail lights tot he SE black ones. I was thinking of painting around the rear license plate like the mid 2000's TL's. Anyone ever do this and have pics? I think it would help break up the rear and look good. Thoughts? http://www.latestautoreviews.com/wp-...-Rear-View.jpg

Ok, that was really helpful, I did a quick mockup in Photoshop and it looked good. I was just seeing if there were real pics before I took the plunge and did it.

I say try it and if its unbareably horrible all you need is a new trunk. Not something you cant replace fairly easily

Yeah, a new trunk is only 2...or 300 dollars. That's just pocket change. Shouldn't be too hard to replace if you botch this.

Not sure why everyone is giving me a hard time on this. It was just a thought and wanted to see pics if it had been done. Not my car but one that's the same color. Maybe I'll give it a go this weekend. Thank you for all the well thought out sarcastic responses

like Lexus said, just paint it without sanding before paint, then f you don't like it you can wet sand off, spray paint thats just sprayed on the base paint is surprisingly easy to remove without damaging the old paint.

It looks silly. Just paint the whole back part of the trunk black, from the burger/crease down

I've seen pics of that and am not a fan. I think it looks awesome on a TL and think it would on the max as well. I know the pic is not the best but I think it would look better in person. It would sort of match the front grill color and break up the back end a bit.

Here, OP:

Properly shopped. Sorta.

Now tell me what you think...

I honestly thinking making it gray makes it look like Nissan got lazy, decided to cut corners to save on costs, and just decided to skip painting that spot.

It doesn't really flow with the rear end.

That's just how we roll.

My opinion... it could only work because your tails are black, and you have black badges. And even then, it might still look odd. But because you've got a black trim theme going on, you might actually pull it off.

However, your shopped example is a poor thing to go on. Create a thread in the Photoshop Forum. Pony up the original, and ask people to darken/blacken the license plate area. See what happens and reassess the idea.

If you do it- go charcoal gray not glossy or jet black.

Beige & black = fugs

BTW, your SHIFT_performance window decal is conspicuously off-center. Looks very odd.

Love the tapered exhaust tips, however. That looks great.

That's NOT my car, was just and example. Mine is the same color though and with black tails and emblems.

Yeah, I agree, I think black would be ugly, I was thinking gunmetal. That's what I used on my GLE rims and the emblems and it think they came out great.

Honestly if you're going to go through with this, you are going to want the black around the plate to match the black on the tail lights as closely as possible or it is going to clash horribly. The problem with that is that the 00-01 SE tails have that weird brownish color going on, so it may be worth fully blacking out the tail lights in the same color as the work on your trunk.

Also, consider vinyl instead of paint. I was being a little sarcastic when I said to spray paint it lol

You know what would help? A more simple, less plastic, trim around your license plate.

Look for the Cruiser License Plate frame, particularly in black like the one in the middle here.

It would also help not to post photos in such huge resolution.

told you it would clash with the tail lights.
