Cheap Double Din Trim? Step in please...
Cheap Double Din Trim? Step in please...
For everyone that has this cheap piece of crap trim piece:
Has anyone found a way to combat the ridiculous bulge at the bottom of the trim piece???
I tried superglue, didn't hold.
I'm out of 3M double sided tape I was going to try that next.
And either one of those ideas will make taking apart the stereo/ACC, etc a huge pain.
I managed to get the top sitting flush (got rid of the huge 'step') with some superglue, it's not perfect but it's better for sure. I will probably make it all one piece with epoxy and paint it, but I'm not going to bother if I can't get the bottom sitting right as well.
I know about the GXE kit, I don't have $130+shipping to Canada for a trim piece. I may end up going this route later on, but I want to give getting the cheap piece fixed a real shot first. Maybe it's foolish I dunno.
Pics for clarification, I'm talking about the bulge in the center:

And the top, superglued flush:

i can put you in contact with my nissan guy in Hilton Head, SC...Deckdout2 was just doing a partout. but if you want let me know and ill get you his phone number and ill let him know you're going to contact him about a GXE dash kit so he'll be on the look out to hear from you
im wondering if your trim is just a piece of crap to begin with; and maybe you shud just get another one. i dont have any bulge on the lower part of the trim. mind you it doesnt sit flush with the climate control unit but it doesnt bulge out like yours. thats horrible. and mind you i only paid $16 dollars for my kit.
Should be the same as the GXE kit I mentioned.
I just looked at the Pic from Courtesy Nissan for it, http://www.courtesyparts.com/vent-ctr-p-396441.html
It looks tapered???? Can someone clarify this for me?? Is the OEM Navi screen tapered or something? Cause I don't want that.
I think it is, I got it from a member with the busted up Pioneer Navi that I'm trying to sell locally. I'm not 100% sure what make it is.
The HVAC won't slide forward though it's mounted to the bracket, and doing so wouldn't fix the 'bow' anyhow unfortunately.
This is a really good idea, I'm going to give that a shot. Will post back with results.

^hmm well maybe it's not then... I dont know would need other members imput of their kits/issues to verify.
It seems that the 'bar' across the bottom is just a shade too long causing it to bow a bit when installed. I'd hate to have to cut it but that's an option too.
Anyone able to paint match the trim colour or is it close to impossible?

Yeah I figure if I go for paint I'll have to do everything. I don't mind the stock look though it matches the tones in the rest of the car perfectly. Anything else would be a bit 'off'.
I'm going out to try the heat method the little man is sleeping finally. Will post back.

Heat + SuperGlue = No more bow. Just be careful with the heat, test on the backside first to get a feel for it. This kind of heat will warp, melt and disfigure the plastic all to hell. You want to stop just before that happens

Random in case you didn't know, if you remove the blue covering off the ACC bulbs everything turns Orange. Kind of cool but not the route I'm going, I'll be LEDing it soon:

Thanks again Froggmann, hope this helps others.
I will see how it looks in the daytime. I may try to live with it, it's doesn't look too bad now.
^Custom - I've already ordered too many various LED items, and I want a white/blue look if I can pull it off also.
Slim- I thought that would help someone. If my HU wasn't green/blue I'd be all over the Creamsicle colour scheme (white/Amber/orange), would be VERY original and downright beautiful.

You're going to do the orange/amber?
You are going to have a tough time getting the gauges that colour, the backing has a blue tint as well as the gauge faces themselves. You need to calibrate the speedo before taking the needle off, FAQ/DIY has the link for that procedure. I was going to grab it for you but can't find it quick enough.

No problem I have had remold a few things to get them to work in the past.
As for the paint, according to this thread Duplicolor Storm Gray is a close match.

No texture, any appearance of texture is just in the paint. There is a serious flake/metallic effect in the OEM paint though, and I don't imagine matching that will be possible.
^is that the Scosche kit? If so, mine is definately not that kit, that looks clean, the lines follow much better, and the cutout for the HU is actually the right size.
Anyone able to verify the taper on the GXE kit I was inquiring about???

^I need to pull it off again and re-do it, it's not holding at the top 100% because I messed with it so much after. I am going to wait until I pull it all apart for LED's though.
Still want to know about the GXE kit I can't imagine it's tapered like it seems to be in that pic. Strange.

I can't verify the taper for you but I did find a few good photos of an installed GXE kit:

Thanks for the verification on that man.
I'm saying forget that
looks like they had to put another piece behind it to eliminate the gap caused by the taper... it doesn't look proper either.
This sucks I thought that GXE kit was the answer to our poor trim issues.

Hey, I have the same Scorsche kit and the same avh 3200dvd and I have a gap between the trim piece where the radio sits and the air controls. How were you able to get the gap out? I had a dual din kenwood and never had that gap until I bought the pioneer.
