rattle and clunk

hi
I replaced last year 4 motor mounts (swapped to manual ones ebay) both side LCA with new ball joints, both inner tie rods, sway bar end links and 2 swaybar bushings, both cv axles, front strut mounts and struts because I lowered the car with h@r springs
I am currently experiencing a rattling sound from the left front only when coasting over bumpy roads.
I also get a single clunk occasionally when coasting to a stop while aplying the brake I hear the clunk on the left front side and I feel the clunk (only one clunk) on the brake pedal
I just passed my state inspection and was told my front end is tight (ball joints and tie rods)

any thoughts

I have the same problem with my '01 SE, even with my OEM setup. No clue what could be causing the clunk, it's been inspected at 3 separate places since I've owned it and no one can diagnose the sound.

Have you checked the hood and latch?

I replaced the upper strut mounts 6 months ago.

the hood is tight (i had the radiatior mount replaced 2 years ago and they had to take the front end of the car off). but Ill check the hood.

its weird id swear its something to do with the brakes because when I slow from 65 to a stop I can hear a thud when I finally stop, just one thud.

I thought it was the springs rattiling on the strut, or maybe the moog sway bar mounts I put on last year were bad, (I re-greased the mounts and still have same rattling).

the rattilinng happens only when going over "rip-rap, washboard" type roads, here in the north there are potholes everywhere.

Sometimes when its very cold the sounds are more frequent, as it gets warmer they tend to be less frequent.

Any luck on this fix? Its pretty common with 2000-2001 maybe, even later models. I've got the same problem, last tread I read indicated maybe it is the strut boots and bump stops

KYB Brand, Part SB104

Cheap via RockAuto.com

Any thoughts? You've already replaced many items I was thinking about so I'm think it is this for my car, or Sway Bar Endlinks/bushings.

This is going to sound kind of strange but i was having the clunk/rattle and i found it to be a combo of 2 very unrelated things.
1.when i installed new door speakers i found the front speakers were a bit loose and could wiggle around when i replaced them 90% of the rattle went away.
2.My glove box i noticed when searching for the rest of the noise that when my wife was in the car the noise was not there the whole time like it is when im alone driving so i watched for seat movement and all kinds of things that could be going on.then i noticed about 2 weeks ago when cleaning the inside that my wife crosses her leg and her foot rest on the glove door(noticed the dirt marks on the door) so i asked her to take a ride and cross her legs like normal sound completly gone!so now im in search of a way to stop the back of the glove box from banging on the heater box.

clunk and rattle from front right strut mount

I have the same problem seems...i have a 2007 maxima and changed the struts to kyb gr2 and spring to H and R...there is a rattle/clunk sound in the rt side only...left side is perfect...i changed the strut mounts to kyb also then changed back to stock mounts, brand new, and also replaced the front right strut...the noise is less so the sturt mount helped, but about 50% of it is still there...this is driving me crazy...2 different dealers cant figure it out...

Rattle and Clunk STILL....

Still havent figured it out BUT its getting worse it almost sounds like my wheels are going to fall off, (hopefully they wont, ) now that the warmer weather is here, my butt will have to get out and figure it out, or a part will finally fail and then I will know what it is.

The strut boots and bump stops I replaced when I added the h@r springs and new KYB shocks.

I am thinking maybe the shocks are going, or the rubber gaskets that are on top of the springs and under the strut mount are worn/torn, because its a metal to metal rattle sound on both sides (I read somewhere that there was a recall on the rubber also in 2000 maximas right side only).
I also would swear that it also sounds like the right front passanger engine mount is bad again. (but mount looks fine and the engine isnt moving as much as it did before I replaced it, but it was a ebay part).

I am almost ready to pay my mechanic to look at it,,, almost..
time will tell, or I will start riding my motorcycle more

rattle and clunk solved (for 2 weeks now)

I replaced the rubber that is between top of spring and bottom of strut mount, got 2 of them (rubber rings for top of spring one each side).
I also added some rubber hose (can't remember what size, I got 2 feet of a couple of sizes) to the spring top and bottom where it rests on metal. The stock plastic pieces didn't fit exact and thats where the rattle noises from the h@r springs were coming from.
the clunk noise ended up being the caliper bracket on the drivers side. The slide pin with the rubber on it was actually seized to the bracket.
now I don't hear any rattles and/or clunks.
Hope this helps anyone.

Thanks for coming back with the final diagnosis...I hope everybody would do the same after their problems get fixed.

HOLY CRAP! I finally read this thread, and was going to suggest the slide pins!! I removed both of mine about a year ago and installed new little boots with graphite caliper grease, cleaned the slide pin, addes a smidgen of anti-seize on the thread and away I go.

wish i read this sooner, I could'a given you my $.02 earlier

JOB WELL DONE

I have been throwing good money at this for about 2 weeks now. New struts, strut mounts, stab. bar bushings and end links, even a new LCA on the right side for good measure. Still the clunk continues... If it is this simple slide pin issue, I am going to be both elated and pi55ed. I will follow up later....

Thanks for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The brake calipers were fine on mine. The hunt for the clunk continues...

Could it be an engine mount? It seems to clunk much more while coasting than accelerating. You can feel it in the floor under your feet - more prominent on the passenger floor. I tightened the frame to body mount bolts too.

The engine mount on the Pass side is known for wearing out which will cause clunking when going over shallow potholes and bumps.

If you feel it under your feet id say its the inner tie rod drivers side.
try to see if outer tie rod has any movement.
If not remove it and slide off boot that's on the inner tie rod and see if all the grease is gone.
my inner tie rods were flopping because the steering rack was leaking and the grease was contaimonated.
So check the tie rods it sounds like the inner (the floor banging)
I got mine cheap ebay did inner and outer both sides for $60.00 you need the removal tool for the inner.
