5th Generation Rust Belt Blues...
5th Generation Rust Belt Blues...
I live in NY.
On my pearlescent white '00 GLE, the rear fenderwells are rusting, and it's accelerating really, really fast.... like I wouldn't doubt if a little chunk of fenderwell chips off later this year.
My super black '00 GXE on the other hand is just starting to bubble there...
I'm really short on money right now, but am washing the car as much as possible; this was a very road-salty winter...
What do I do to help slow this crap down?
And given that I'm in the rust belt, and there is other small bits of rust happening on the car, is it fair to say that short of a complete sandblast/bondo/re-paint there's nothing I'll really be able to do about this?
Like, on the white car, how would they fix this anyway? Fender lip metal will have to get replaced; how is that done?
Grr... both of these cars aren't quite paid off yet either... it sucks to be driving around something that's not paid off yet but is rusting.

there are actually some body shop supply stores that sell a stip of metal that is used to replace the lip. i have had the same problem on my 00 SE and replaced it myself and looks great. but then again i also used to work in a body shop.
i've got the same problem, but it took about a year for it to eat a small crack through the fender. wish i had searched before it got as bad as it is now.
