1.) Did it actually overheat?
2.) If it did then we can dive into this further but in the meantime.....
3.) Fans are controlled by a couple of different mechanisms.
4.) I humbly offer these threads, which by the way I found by searching the term “cooling fans” http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...ling-fans.html http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...ling-fans.html
5.) Did you PW so you could post this thread when you could have easily searched?

Check the fuse, or check for power at the fan

Both fans are designed to run at the same time, never just one. So its either a bad fan motor or a blown fuse.

The driver's side fan (fan motor 1) uses underhood fuse G.
The passenger side fan (fan motor 2) uses underhood fuse H.

And you don't need any mods for your car to run cool in Texas summers. They work just fine the way Nissan designed them.

Mine never run at the same time unless AC is on... Passenger side runs whenever it needs too, and my driver side runs only when my air cond. Is on. If my AC is on it will shut off when my main fan shuts off though... But it doesnt run unless its on..

Hmmmmmm they should both either run at high speed or low speed but always both on at the same time.

Most cars the fans don't always run together. One usually works primarily as a condenser fan.

According to the FSM they should both run at the same time. They are two speed fans though so they run at different speeds depending on what's going on. I'd go through the troubleshooting procedure in the FSM.

Your fans have to be working otherwise you would overheat, especially in the summer. The only time the fans run constantly is when you have the a/c turned on, otherwise they cycle on and off. Here in Texas where the temp gets up to 105+ degrees, the fans still cycle on and off, they don't run constantly.

And to all those who say that both their fans don't run at the same time - YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!

Sounds like a new radiator fan assembly might be needed.

My driver's side fan quit working, ended up replacing the assembly along with my leaking radiator

speaking of a/c . mine is not connected by the belt at all. clutch or the compressor must have craped out so the old owner shorten the belt, go figure. I have heat though, will that but coincided also the min temp will only go as low as 65 .. wonder why

any way i got this car back in July and it was fine .. now its cold on long island
so running the heat as well , of course the winter air could be cooling the engine but even in the summer nothing even after a 80 mile round trip drive in 70 degree weather.. no fans or over heating, coolant amount it fine too
i just dont get it

So you are saying that your temp never goes past halfway, and the fans aren't on.....where is the problem?

If you are not running the a/c, the fans only turn on when your engine coolant reaches a certain temperature.

Maybe you want to check your fans to see if they work. Unplug the fans from the wire harness and get 2 jumper wires, one for 2 volts and one for ground. On the fan motor connector use the jumpers as follows:

Code:
This is the view of the fan motor connector, looking at the contacts.

   ╔═╗
╔══╩╦╩══╗ pin 1 = hi speed 12 volts
║ 1 ║ 2 ║ pin 4 = hi speed ground
╠═══╬═══╣
║ 3 ║ 4 ║ pin 2 = lo speed 12 volts
╚═══╩═══╝ pin 3 = lo speed ground
