Tips on gauge installation...help needed, writeup will result

Hello all,
I am thinking about completing a triple pod gauge installation on my 2000 Maxima GLE soon.

Did some searches, but couldn't find anything helpful here.

Does anyone have the ECU wiring pinout for a 2000?
And for a Air/Fuel ratio gauge, would it be better to splice into the sensor wire or ECU?

Finally, seeing that our cars have two O2 sensors, would it be best to splice into the rear O2 sensor where the exhaust is?

Hopefully with some help, I can complete this project and do a detailed writeup on all of the details.

Thanks

The Nissan FSM (factory service manual) has the ECU connector with pin numbers but it does not have the signal names. For signal names, you have look at specific circuit schematics.

If you need a FSM, you can download one from here:

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/

The file named fwd.pdf is the "cover page" file, the starting point.
The file named idx.pdf is the alphabetical index file.

For what you are doing, I don't think there are any differences in the 2000 early production manual and the late production manual.

Thanks for that info man.

Where would be the safest feed to tap into, from the ECU or the O2 sensor coming out of the exhaust?

Mine is a Canadian model, meaning it has two O2 sensors.

Tapping into the ECU doesn't seem like the best idea, but whoever's done this setup could perhaps confirm this?

Why in your right mind would you want to tap into a stock NB O2 sensor?

Most of ours on here are Cali Spec with 4 sensors, but just because it has 4 sensors, doesn't mean it's better or worse than the other. They all are not worth tapping into.

Get a wideband and install it where the 2 banks meet in the y-pipe, after the headers so you get a good clean reading from both banks in one spot.

Of course, you should get readings preferably before any catalytic converters. That will be impossible if you still have stock pre-cat and not aftermarket headers.

The electronic A/F ratio gauge I am looking to purchase as part of a three gauge from GlowShift.com does not provide a wideband A/F gauge, which makes that option not possible.

Considering this, would it be best to tap into the ECU?

As stated before, I heard this was not the best approach.

Your approach is not the best. Get a wideband and stop wasting your time with the narrow band stock sensors.

Get a triple gauge pod if you must and modify it so that a common brand WB gauge can fit in it. Other than that, you're wasting your time.

+1

All putting a gauge on a narrowband O2 sensor will get you is a light show. No usable data will be displayed because the stock O2 sensors are just desinged to bounce between 0 and 1 volt as the mixture changes from lean to rich.

If you decide you absolutely must have a gauge on your narrowband O2 sensor, the "ECM Terminals and Reference Value" section of the EC.pdf FSM is what you need to look at to determine pin outs of the ECU connector.

Appreciate the comments, and seems like installing a wideband A/F gauge, so will look for a useful substitute gauge instead of it.

Out of the 3 gauges, I will get a Volt and Oil Pressure gauge.
What 3rd gauge would be most useful?

Is this just a "mod for the sake of modding" or do you have a legitimate need for additional gauges?

For my wideband, which has 6 inputs, I have ECT, MAF, TPS, MPH, RPM, and WB AFR.

No gauges needed, just use the laptop and software which have digital gauges as seen here:

And unlike static gauges, this one can log all of the aforementioned items for later analysis.

My voltage readout if needed comes from my SAFCII, and I only need it every couple of years when I know my battery may be on it's way out, same goes for alternator.

Useful items, IMO, would be ECT, AFR, and that's about it. Oil pressure, not so much since your car already has a warning light for this, and unless you're low on oil or revving beyond 7700, it will not emit.
