Shifter Button Stuck

Hi guys I've had this ongoing problem thats been getting worse and worse.
The button on my shifter is stuck and wont go in when the brakes engaged.
(i.e. I press the brake and hear a little click noise like it's trying to release the button, but the button won't free, stranding me in park until I stick something in the shift lock release). It must be something that has to do with the shifter receiving the signal that the brakes engaged to free up the buton.
My brake lights are working.
Button releases maybe 5% of the time on the first try but 95% does not...
Any ideas what my problem could be?
