What are you guys using? Or do you take your car to Autozone or Advance and borrow theirs?

 

I go to advanced, its free and right by my house so why not (probably should invest in buying one eventually though..)

Cheap, got it on sale for $20 a while back, and works great. If you're a mechanic and need fancy datalogging you'll need something more but just to read and clear codes and check overall systems its all I've needed.

 

I use a Bluetooth OBDII scanner I got off Ebay for $25. I use that in conjunction with my android based "Torque" program. It's awesome. Will read codes, reset codes, give you vital engine parameters, etc.

 

OBDII scanner, they are getting very cheap nowadays.

 

Can you link me to the one you got? The Bluetooth I mean. I can use the logging feature. Yesterday my motor got reallly rough for a few seconds followed by a flashing CEL. It went away and began running fine after a few miles. Just got back from Advance and the car had no stored codes.

Personally, I won't buy any of those readers anymore. With the purchase of an app, and a wireless adapter (Bluetooth) you have all the functionality plus some of one of those code readers.

It's about $5 and works on most cars depending on your adapter. Personally I have one of the $35 ebay adapters and it has worked on most of the ODBII cars I have come across. I do have problems with some 96-99 maxes. The $100 PLX or Kiwi adapters are supposed to work better though.


If you are on iOS platform (iPhone, iTouch, iPad) Dynolicious is supposed to be a pretty good app. I have no experience with it though.

No, please tell us why you chose a scanner thread to ask about valvebody solenoids? As far as I know of these issues are widely dissimilar. Perhaps the "Click on a random thread and ask my question." strategy works on other boards but, it won't here.

Does the purchased Torque offer more codes than the free one? Most all the time, if I get a SEL, Torque states there are no codes to read, yet...

...I have a Palm w/Auterra Dyno-Scan adapter and it reads way more codes.

I have the eBay BT adapter + HTC Eris + Torque FREE. Not too happy w/it.

My goal was to get the phone app working and sell the Palm Auterra Dyno-Scan set-up. But no plans to until I feel confident that the BT + TORQUE app actually works.

 

I would say the paid versions will always be better. I have read good things on Torque but I won't be getting it till I get my HTC to replace my crap Captivate with in a few weeks. Gonna pick up on of those bluetooth adapters from ebay as well.

 

If you read the app details the paid version offers WAY more. I would bet it is more up to date.

 

I searched for OBDII bluetooth and got a variety of prices.on different brands. Anyone have input on any of them? $50-$100. Not looking to spend more than needed....or wanted.

 

i Have one from mac tools. Tells me the code with what the code is and an expplanation of the code.

 

Don't really know, my car doesn't throw that many codes. But I have had 95% success in finding codes in the vehicles I have connected it to. 96-99 Maxes used to be a bit dodgy but an update 3 or so months ago fixed that.

BTW the Blue and Orange/Blue ones are all the same as long as they have the same revision. These are the cheapest way to get into this but the reliability isn't always the best.

I read reviews on the ELM357 on amazon and several people state it loses connection every minute or so. If you were to simply use this app to read codes that it no big deal. However if you are interested in using the constant real time info the PLX version would be better.

 

Just don't buy the one's from China.

I bought a ELM327 and used it for hours on end in both my Nissans with no problems in connectivity and works perfect in real time.

 

Uh, highly doubt there are any other's but the one's from China...

ELM327 is ELM327 - Hard to tell which are made where and if they are true ELM327 chips or not w/o it specifically stating in the descriptions...

I believe that is a typo. ELM357 is incorrect...

Same one I have and it's been pretty solid. Wish I could say that about my Actron scanner.

I have an iPhone. Only one mentioned here was Dynolicios. I looked at it but does not appear to be a code reader of such, more just a pocket dyno

 

Stupid iPhone. Handheld forum app won't let me edit after posting accidentally.

Anyway, anyone know/use any iPhone apps compatable with a good blue tooth OBD II reader?

Thank you sir. I'll look into it. But, is this the only one though? Honestly, in my personal experience, PLX is crap...maybe just their wideband systems, but had two and neither worked well. Thier customer service was even worse.

Now, if only Aaron or Cattman had something like this!

 

That was just a listing of apps that are available on the iTunes market. Check to see which app you want then see if it can use a bluetooth or just wifi adapter. If it can use bluetooth then any of the adapters form the Torque URL i posted above should work.

I'm looking for a bluetooth dongle that works with both a computer (Win7 64-bit) and android device. Someone pointed out the ELM327 devices, and I came across this one.

However, if you look at the reviews, it sounds like this doesn't work well with our Maxima's, and that there may be a "bug" in the ECU of the 2001-2002? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have it and use it on my 2002 and my mothers 2006 jeep. Works fine. Lags a little. About one second. Who cares though.

 

Hello. Im Doug from Australia. Im curious about the Auterra Dyno Scan. The Dyno Scan dosent seem to be able to retrieve many if any trouble codes at all.(Maxima A33, 2001.). Does the computer software offer more capability, or are there simply no codes there. Thankyou.

 

I use a Equus Innova 3140 and am quite happy with it.....might have a look at these bluetooth ones tho.....

That's the guy I bought my BT Elm327 from, and it works fine. I paid $21 for it, but he has a sale for $18 right now.
