it should just unscrew off the post. i've got a 2k not a 2k2. but i was at a nissan dealer and was checking out a 2k2 and playing with the gated shifter. the stupid thing just twirls like crazy, no threadlock or anything, just screwed on with some pressure. it was so easy i actually wondered if it was on right.

hehe...i was looking at my friend's 2K2 shifter, but the darn thing was soo stiff and sturdy..i think you'd need a cloth and a plumbing wrench to loosen up the joints.

Hey guys, I'm looking to replace my shifter **** too. Did the leather portion turn only or does the metal piece below it unscrew with the leather **** as well?

I want to replace it with the woodgrain **** found on the Infiniti I35

the whole thing comes off, including the metal piece
the only thing left is the little stick on which you screw the new one on

Hmmm...I really liked the Hurst T-shifter on my B&M Star Shifter (Chevelle) and on my M-21 4 Speed in my old Z/28...

Definitely makes manual shifting easier, the T-shifter fits your hand so well. Not sure if the look is really suited to the car though.
