240sx 3" test pipe vs. Megan Test pipe
So I bought a megan test pipe from a fellow .org member and let me tell you the Fitment was HORRIBLE. It was like 1" longer than OEM. I was not Pleased with it at all - so i remember some one here used a 240sx test pipe and it was the same exact size as OEM.
So sure enough, I looked it up and its 12 3/8th". I ordered it that same day off Ebay and got it yesterday. IT fit Like a glove. Here are some pics for comparison to help anyone out. Left is 240sx 3" pipe - middle is Cattman Fast cat & right is the Dreaded over sized Test Pipe. Notice how the 240 pipe is the same exact size as the cattman fast cat. http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/a...11006-1620.jpg http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/a...11006-1621.jpg |
That 240 test pipe looks delicious.

To the op, are you pairing this up with aftermarket headers?

Yes, its paired up with Cattman Headers/Y and a Cattman 3" Exhaust. |
This thread = winning.
Buying it. |
Probably cheaper to find one on a 240 forum HM
|
I got the Megan and had it cut and rewelded. Cost me another 15 bucks. I'm not ready to go 3" yet!
|
NICE....did you feel anything on the butt dyno when switching from the Fastcat to the Testpipe and do you got any Vids....:D
|
Hey so I got stock y pipe and 2.5 catback will this still bolt up even though its 3"
|
ahh yes the 3" 240sx test pipe. The cheapest one on ebay fits perfectly (non-resonated). I used the stock y-pipe gasket and the supplied gasket, then the supplied gasket and 3"brm gasket for that. No leaks at all, have to say though, the sound is louder. I'd suggest buying the resonated version...

Can anyone measure the center to center bolt holes on the 3" 240sx test pipe.
Reason is I have OBX headers, and id like to leave them the way they are and then go 3" after that without hacking up the headers. So any flange and bolt hole measurements would be very helpfull. Thanks guys. |

^ he's right. but if you still want the measurement i'll get it to you MAXSPEED96CT

I have the fast cat coming. is the 240 test pipe the more HP producing route or is it just a cost savings (which is a huge difference)?
|
^ with your 3.5 you'll get the added HP with the test pipe. Won't be much but you will get it.
|
Why only with the 3.5? :gotme:
People are acting as if the .5L difference in displacement totally negates the same basic principles of physics that are the foundation of car tuning. Eliminating restrictions WILL benefit everyone. Even on a 1.8L engine. |

I don't believe that to be true...well, not a 1.8l engine with a 3" exhaust anyway. Too much tq lost to really see benefits.
On most cars without a proper AFr tuning apparatus increase flow will cause the engine to run leaner and therefore to lose torque. I highly recommend reading this http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/te...Scavenging.pdf ....However, Wollongong (Australia) mechanic Kevin Davis has done extensive testing of varying backpressure on a number of performance engines..... ...The tests came about because Kevin has developed a patented variable-flow exhaust that uses a butterfly within the exhaust pipe. He initially expected to use the system to cause some backpressure at low loads 'to help torque.' However, he soon changed his mind when any increase in back pressure proved to decrease torque on a properly tuned engine. What increasing the backpressure does do is dramatically quiet the exhaust. One of the engine dyno tests carried out by Kevin was on a modified 351-4V Cleveland V8. Following the extractors he fitted a huge exhaust that gave a measured zero backpressure. Torque peaked at 423 ft-lbs at 4700 rpm, with power a rousing 441 hp at 6300 rpm. He then dialed-in 1.5-psi (10.4 kpa) backpressure. As you'll see later, very few exhausts are capable of delivering such a low backpressure on a road car. Even with this small amount of backpressure, peak torque dropped by 4 per cent and peak power by 5 per cent. He then changed the exhaust to give 2.5-psi backpressure. Torque and power decreased again, both dropping by 7 per cent over having zero backpressure. These results were achieved on a large engine with a large overlap cam - one of the types some people suggest is 'supposed' to like backpressure. If, in fact, power does increase with increased exhaust back pressure, it is most likely the air/fuel ratio and/or ignition timing that are no longer optimal for the altered state of engine tune."..... |
Reasons why I am definitely getting this:
1) Resonated 2) Aligns perfectly 3) 3" to match my 3" Cattman catback If anyone is looking for a 2.5" non-resonated, I have one I'm trying to get rid of. Let me know! Thank you, OP, for this find! |
definitely a great choice for those with 3" exhausts. I was looking at this exact test pipe a while back, but I don't have a 3" exhaust, so it wouldn't be worth it.

Will this 240 test pipe bolt up to a totally stock 03 maxima exhaust? Reason I ask is I am going to be adding headers and a catback in the future but would like to start adding some of the cheaper items first.

Hello, I just figured I'd resurrect this thread briefly instead of starting a new one. I'm looking to grab a 3" resonated test pipe from Ebay for my 2003 SE, however I'm having a little bit of trouble deciphering which one I need to get, as the original listings in this thread are very old and outdated, and no longer available.
Is there a specific year of 240 sx that I need to purchase for this? This one looks like it may work, but is a lot more expensive than what I was expecting to pay according to other thread results: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DME-3-STAINLESS-RESONATOR-CAT-DELETE-TEST-PIPE-89-94-240SX-S13-SILVIA-SR20DET/261094881372?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3Ddaa19d6d45cb4f2a8ddf612bf4bc7b18%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D7%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D370540055922 |

Idk. My hi-flow cat smelled pretty "good" there at the end of its life. Then again, it was used fastcat and prolly just old and abused.
When cats go bad it smells like rotten eggs. If your car is running right a TP shouldn't smell that bad. When I had just my turndown on after the y I hardly smelled anything extra..just got a lot louder. |
