Side Marker Directional Mod - Write Up (With Pics)

I had been doing a lot of searching for this rewire but no write ups had any pictures to help. Very simple 15 minute mod, have fun.
Here is a video of the results:

Tools needed:
- 16 Gauge wire (about 2 feet)
- Wire cutters
- Electrical Tape
- 2 Quick Splices (Optional)
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- 10mm Socket (Optional)

1. Get about 12" of your new wire.

2. Pop out your directional. There will be a red, black, and green wire. Splice your NEW wire with the GREEN wire. If you don't have quick splices, you can always solder or just tape them together.

3. Pop off your side marker using your flat head. Careful not to crack it, be gentle.

4. Find a hole to run your new wire down into your side marker area. Remove the headlight with your 10mm socket if it will help you do this. I had to with my passenger side one.

5. Your side marker harness has a black and red wire. Cut the BLACK wire an inch or more up. Wrap and tape your NEW wire with the short BLACK end still hanging off the side marker harness. Tape it up. Dab of solder to ensure a good connection is always optional.

Nice, any way to get them to blink at the same time?

Nice write up, but is it suppose to blink at a different time from each other?.

**EDIT** Nishfish871 beat me to it lol.

Its kind of goofy blinking opposite of each other.

When the parking lights or headlights are on yes, they alternate.
When all lights are off they blink at the same time though.
No way around this that I know of, but I kind of prefer the alternating look.

It has to do with the ground system, the ground alternates when the headlights are on IIRC. And here:

Alternate blinking... Free the Whales! Why would you want it otherwise?

As Tuner just said, they will blink in sync with the lights off, but that's daytime, and you won't see the sidemarkers on anyway, so meh.

This was a good write-up. I can't remember where I found the instructions to do this thing, but wish this write-up were around then. I love the sidemarker rewire mod. If I weren't so lazy, I would have done the rears, too. But the wiring is a little bit less accessible back there.

Great mod and write-up. I would think the benefit of this would be if someone was in your blind spot, and couldn't see your front or rear signals, it would alert them you were coming into their lane. Merging!

I was just about to ask about doing it to the back signals too. I'll try it when I get a chance to see how much of a hassle the wiring is.

Did this when i first got my 5.5 gen ill take a night time video off it for anyone considering doing this mod. Its a great mod. I dont like my sidemarkers on at night at constant. Just want them to blink when changing lanes. Also rewired the two corner lights in the headlight.

I don't understand why Nissan didn't wire the side markers to blink with the turning signal ON to begin with, and why we have to do it as an aftermarket mod for our safety...

How much of a hassle were the rear ones? I haven't looked yet. Is the wiring colors the same and everything?

it was just a tab bit harder than the front. all the wiring was the same. just connect to the rear turnsignals.

[youtube] xxxxxxx [youtube/.]

Do not insert the period at the end of youtube/ and it will work.

Just insert the letters/numbers after the = mark and it will work. If you're still confused, quote my post and you'll see what I did to embed it.

No, it has to be at least 16 gauge IMO. Anything smaller (higher gauge #) would risk burning up or frying a connection. Larger is fine of course.

can you pm me which wires to use for the 5.5 mod? the earlier models dont have the same headlights.

i just tried to do this, starting with the rear. the problem i am hitting is that the side markers are off till i hit the turn signal. any way to have them on and then just blink with the signals?

edit: trying to do this on an 03

edit #2: no need to answer this, double checked the wiring diagrams and got it to work properly. for any of those wishing to do the rear lights, you can do it all from inside the trunk, just remove the lining clips, move the lining aside and you have full access to the wiring for the rear markers.

I know this is digging up an old thread but I think this is a great addition here. I was trying to find this thread to mod my car but I stumbled across this over at a mazda6 forums. Doing the mod this way with relays and diodes makes the directionals and side markers flash at the same time, keeps the original parking light function, and is safe for cars with fancier electronic modules. The write up is a little more in depth but may be worth it to those who want this.
