This is 2000 Maxima OEM headlights. Origianlly it looked like this, heavily pitted and yellow.

I took it down to 600grit and went back up with 1000, 1500, and 2000. Here is what it looked like after 1st polish. Haven't done the turn signal section.

However, it still have this blue-ish haze all over. I couldn't get rid of it. I wet sanded down again and even did compund and still the same. Went to 5 different polishing agents (Mother's, 3M, Novus, Turtle wax, Brasso, even Turle Car Wax) and still the same. The shine is there and the surface is good consisdering what it was, but I still have this very subtle blue haze. I took a dozen of picture with my 12 year old camera, this is the best I could do, Sorry.



Went a head to do the other side with the same exact procedure and it was much better, no blue haze.




My arm is about to fall off, couldn't even feel the tip of my finger still ( I didn't use rotary buff).

I was about to ask if you had hit them yet with a high speed variable polisher as I can still see the polishing compound streaks & haze on the surface. I have always had the best results using Mequiars Plast-x Cleaner Polish and work it in using my porta cable polisher with a clean blue foam pad.

They do look much improved over what they had become, but doing this job by hand is next to impossible as it will only get you so far ... you really do need to hit them with a good high speed polisher to bring out the best in them.

 

Yea. +1 on machine polish with a 3m polishing compound.. do this all day at work... polisher is a must!

 

What do you recommend for machine polisher. The Porter Cable is pretty spendy....

walmart sells a buffer for fairly cheap. oh and if you have a harbor freight close by you can pick up a DA like the PC for like $30

After you the wet sand with the 1200 grid sand paper try a M3 compound with the buffing machine. It's should remove any yellow haze that's left behind.

Try using the compound in the inside of the lense.

 

MSU aren't new lamps like 90 on ebay for the 5th gens?

I am curious as well a I still have not been able to remove the "last" haze. I just left it. I hit with my Dealt cordless drill and went thru 2 18 volt batteries doing it. I had it!

The polisher is a 6 speed, and will do just about any polishing job that you wish to take on

 

This is exactly why I just got new ones off of ebay.

 

I recently did the restoration on my AE lights. It was a massive improvement over what they were and they shine like new but I have the exact same slightly blueish haze. I had been assuming that it was on the inside of the lens, kinda like the haze that builds up on the inside of your windshield after a while. I had been planning on taking them apart in the future to clean it out but you just saved me a lot of wasted time. It does not bother me enough to buy new housings as everyone but me thinks mine look great. But yeah I guess this is a common thing.

 

That's true but I'm tired of the quality of the back housing. The Ebay back housing is nightmare expecially when loaded with heavy projector. So, I would rather use OEM and restore it, but this time it's a mjor pain....
