Can someone look at pics of my new BOSAL precat....

Just a little quick info. I have a 2000 infiniti i30 and getting the p0430 code. O2 sensors have been changed and are fine. Ordered a bosal precat from rockauto.com and took it out of the box and wasnt for sure if this was normal for a precat.

Seems like the "honeycomb" portion of the precat has a few chips on it. From what i know, i think this portion of the precat isnt the most durable, but just seemed a little odd to me. Here are some pics.....what do you think.....

edit attempt : sorry, cant figure out how to make these pics smaller, but actually may be better as you can see the detail better

Not really sure, never owned a brand new one..but as long as it looks new and you think it isn't going to break down quickly....

I would return it.if you do some searching you will find there is a problem with the honeycomb substrate breaking down and being sucked up into the engine and causing failure.my opinion on returning it is only due to you dont know if there is any cracks or broken materal in there already that you can not see.

I agree. Just doesnt look "right" to me. Too many chips and missing pieces along the edges for a brand new precat. Any other opinions?

thanks

Do NOT install that!!! Look at what happened to lots of the QR25DE's where that stuff actaully got sucked back into the cylinders and ruined the walls. take it back, and make sure that you get one that doesn't look like a hampster got hungry.

is it the front or rear precat? the rear precat material is pretty strong and should be fine if its just tiny chips like that. the front precat is a softer material though

precat price = 225

Its the front precat (getting the p0430 code). Emailed rockauto.com about it with pics. They emailed the bosal guy and he said it was fine and thats normal for that part to do that.

I just dont know

Punch both cats, be happy with better exhaust note and new found power gains, use 02 sim or anti fouler to take care of cel, never worry about it again.

Not going to punch both precats. Reasoning is this. If you screw that up and it doesnt work, it will cost mini-fortune to get them back to normal. There have been some epic fails on people trying to punch their precats. Look at some threads.

Also, some still get CEL codes even after punching precats. Its hit or miss.

Seems the best solution is to get a new precat, install and be done with the CEL codes once and for all. Researched this extensively and this seems to be the outright winner in terms of fixing the p0430 code
