Went to install new front speakers, surprise

I have the 2000 GXE. Now it seems that most of what I read was different that what my car has (front and rear DOOR speakers with no tweeters) but after reading around I expected to remove the panel and find 6.5in speakers mounted to a bracket that I could reuse. But what I found is a one piece speaker unit that mounts to the 3 points directly on the door frame.

So, I assume that basically I have the lowest end of the lowest end speakers, can I buy this bracket by itself? Is there a part number? Tried searching around but every thread I pull up seems to have a 2 piece speaker bracket thing.

The speakers that are in there:

Speakers you will buy will come with a universal bracket that will fit. It also comes with a template of the new speakers for you to mock up. No worries man. Dont trash the connectors though because you can reuse them. If you have any other troubles just hollar or PM me. Car audio is my passion

On some cars I've done I've had to use the template and drill custom holes and mount it on some rubber. Not all aftermarket brackets are created equal lol

No bracket came with the speakers unfortunately.

Found an aftermarket one but was just wondering if there was an OEM replacement. I can always go junkyard searching tomorrow. http://www.car-speaker-adapters.com/items.php?id=SAK050

What speakers did you buy? If you go to a local audio shop they will have one that they will be glad to sell you instead of throwing away. If you ever need something it is better to go there and ask then buy online. See it in person and see if it fits in person I have about 100 laying around lol. The 3 and 4 point mounting speakers are common stock speakers. If a local audio shop doesnt have one then PM me and ill send you some myself $20 for a plastic bracket is a joke. I would make one out of MDF before I bought one for $20.

Haven't had your door panels off yet, have you?

OP - The solution is to source some brackets for the BOSE speakers or custom fab them yourself. The universal adapters sent with the speakers are NOT going to work. Even if you drill the plastic, you will need spacers to pull the speakers out of the door shell for clearance. The best solution is to make some rings with an adapter plate out of mdf. IMO, it's acoustically also the better route over plastic. I've made my own for my 3rd gen and my 5.5. Same exact dimensions, I believe. There is also a guy here on the org(maybe SN James92SE, or some variant of that) that sells them.

One more source if you don't want to make them.

Lol ive taken about 1000 door panels off yes. I have never ever had a problem with Infinity brackets. They work like a dream and mount very securely unlike most cheap brackets. Now if you buy Boss audio speakers? Not so much

A thousand? That's it? Actually, I specifically asked about your(ie Maxima) door panels. I'm curious to see a picture of the universal brackets(even Infinity) you have laying around that will work.

I guess of all the things one could have to fab for a car these brackets would be one of the easier things. Just frustrating when you think you have everything you need until you get down to it and have to put it all back together without finishing.

I hear ya. There are a few people that have butchered their old non-BOSE speakers and combined it with the adapters in the box. That's an option. Personally, I would opt for the mdf.

I have a 4th gen and I didnt use a bracket for my rear deck, I simply mounted the speakers onto the deck with some rubber grommets around mounting points. I will say that most do suck yes and MDF is a better way to go acoustically. All of the Infinity brackets I have are in good use at the moment and free of rattles. However, for arguments sake I think I have one I could take a picture of to show you the differences it has from most you are probably used to seeing. In a 6.5" location it works perfect. The tweeter mounts on Infinities? 2nd to none as well. They know how to make a bracket I will say that.

EDIT:

Dark but for the rear deck in a 4th or rear door panels in a 5th infinity components are the way to go. Spend the xtra flow and actually be able to hear sound from the back of your car lol

There are OEM mounts that you can buy. I've bought them for my 2K GXE but haven't tried them yet. The part numbers are 28167-2Y900 and 28166-2Y900.

Very nice, ironically enough I just found your pics in another thread earlier. I think that is the route I am gonna go.

Cabernet: Thanks for the P/Ns, sucks they are $15 ea, I guess I should have figured OEM would be though.

I think I am gonna go MDF because I get guaranteed fit. Unlike most people I am doing this with 6.75" instead of 6.5" so I would rather just fab it to ensure proper fittage.

I brought a set of oem brackets on the org when i replaced my speakers, they worked fine with the 4 way pioneer 6.5 I purchased. They had a larger magnet causing my windows to get stuck after I rolled them down. The bracket fixed that problem.

Hey--is there an easy way to add tweeters to the rear like in the pic for Bose system??? would like to have some of the highs shifted to the rear of the car.

Thanks Maurice, that just confirms what I was speculating before, the diameter of the speakers I have is 5 and 17/32 so those brackets would have to be expanded by 1/64 to fit. At that point if I am going to do that work I might as well just get the MDF and cut it myself since I would have to do work either way.

You have to have really good speakers in the rear deck in order to hear them. Easy? Its a pretty easy install yes and you could just add in aftermarket tweeters if you wanted. In that pillar there isnt but one place to put the tweeters. It would have been ideal to place them higher but there just isn't room behind the pillar. ****ty but im thinking about adding in rear door panel speakers soon and will do a write up on it so other 4th gen owners could do it as well

You could also buy them...these are plastic but I've seen MDF ones as well.

3/4" is the appropriate thickness.

I ran into this little surprise myself when I upgraded my speakers. I took the budget-hack approach and broke out the old speakers, soldered on the female connectors in order to use the stock plugs, and screwed the new speakers on to the base. Worked like a charm. Granted, not pretty, but no one's ever going to see them again, so I really don't care how "professional" it is. Even if I remove the door panels, no one is likely to tell the defference anyway.

Only downside to hacking up the OEM's is if you want to convert back to stock to sell the car.

The stock speakers in my car were all dead on the left side, and they are so crappy, I would not wish them on my worst enemy! If I were to sell my car and wanted to keep the speakers, I can simply screw in a different set of speakers in there and there would be no need to mod or solder anyting to do the swap.

^^ Also good logic. Depends on the condition of your OEM's. I've removed plenty that were still fine.

when i put new speakers in my 03 SE, i had to get these

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_142SAC6...s.html?tp=2824

not quite an EXACT fit, but they ended up working in the end with a little finesse

^^ Those are about 1/8" thick. If your window doesn't hit the back of your speakers, then your speakers must be REAL shallow.

Necessary thickness of spacers/brackets to prevent this from happening is usually 3/4"

Thanks. Its a PITA to get that rear plastic cover off and 90% of the time it cracks. IE the picture. Once you get tweets in and some good mid-bass it really makes a difference. The staging is important when you have a rear deck bc its just a crappy spot to work in(the winshield being so close) and acoustically the sound doesnt make it to the front
