I noticed this the other day on my right rear quarter panel. Became extremely angry upon inspecting it, but at this point I've accepted the fact that it is what it is and obviously a rock or something kicked up and did a good number on the quarter panel. As you can see in the pics (sorry if they're crappy), a pretty good chunk got taken out. I'm worried about this deteriorating and rusting out the quarter panel.

I know there's other people on here who have dealt with this problem before. What's the best plan of attack? I'd really like to deal with it now before it becomes a bigger problem.

 

I have this problem on my rear wheel arches as well. I tried the cheap and quick fix with it by taking a wire brush to it, and hitting it with some anti-rust spray paint, but it slowed it down a bit. I'm already starting to see surface rust pop up out of the painted areas.

The only thing I can think of to do is to either take it to a body shop, or learn some body skills and grind it out and fill it in with body filler. It will look like dookie, but at least it will be "fixed". I just don't have the $ to have a body shop do it, so I'm debating whether or not to try to tackle it myself.

 

You may be on a budget but quarter panels aren't that expensive...I'll be picking up a parted out 5 gen this month, the quarter panel & radiator support looks HORRIBLE! So i've been searching around & actually found some good cheap prices online. It's better to buy a new one then not have to worry about it if you're planning to keep the car for a long period of time....That's just my .02

 

Like already stated, the proper way to do it would be to take it to a body shop because if you don't do a proper fix then it'll just come back to haunt you.

On the 5th gen's that's the worst spot to get rust due to its 2 metals stick together design. Any openings in those areas, you risk exposing it and rust building up...

If you don't plan to fix it asap, spray some rust inhibitor religiously.

I got my rear quarter panels fixed, although rust free I still spray the rust inhibitor inside and out.

 

i think anyone with a 5th gen on the east coast has this problem.

I've been thinking about taking it to a body shop, but I'm just worried about what kind of numbers they're going to throw at me.

To be more clear, that spot is NOT the result of corrosion. It's damage from something that kicked up on the road or something. It was totally fine and normal up until not long ago and then the other day I just noticed that big chunk that was damaged like that. My concern is that it's going to start rusting and destroy the rest of the quarter panel and I was wondering if there's any kind of body filler or something that can be put on there to stop it.

 

WHAT HE SAID! Never fawk around with body work. If you don't know what you're doing then take it to a shop.

shop around and find the best qoute. though the cheapest estimate isn't necessarily going to give you the best job. My guy would probably charge me about 300-400 at most for something like this. But then again I have da hookups.

I for one would not be able to stand looking at something like this. It would drive me nuts, lol. But I am very **** about my car.

 

Fact is you already have rust there, take it to a body shop. Estimates are free. It also appears as if there was filler on there and whatever hit it busted the filler and that huge chunk let go. It may be worse than it currently appears, there is no way to know without sanding back the paint to check.
