People are going to give u a 1000 different subs and what not but honestly if i had the $ to upgrade id be looking at JLs or hertz energys. There are many great subs our there. Kicker, alpine, audison ect ect so im sure u will find some. Ive had top of the line set ups and cheap budget set ups and im currently running xplods. Ive had the same xplod 12s and xplod amp for 8 years theyve been in 4-5 different boxes and cars and yet they still bang yea there cheap and somewhat dirty in comparison to many others but they still bang after 8 years of beating! Its all on what u like and what u wana spend. Look for rms ratings not peak output. Good luck man.

250.00 is not going to get you much in the way of a quality 10" Sub ... you have not mentioned what .amp you either already have or is that also a part of the 250 you are willing to spend.

If you are more worried about quality then loudness $250 is enough. I have a polk audio sub and kicker amp. Only cost me 170 for it. Sub was $65 and the amp was around $85. Granted the amp is only 250 watts but it is good enough to shake the whole car.

Spend a few weeks on Kijiji/craigslist and if you wait for the right moment you may just find yourself a steal of a deal - $250 should be more than enough to play with if you can install yourself. I've done this before and actually ended up making money on the systems that I sold a few years later. Stick with brand names and you'll be fine.

DB drive makes some of the best quality for price out there at the moment. However, depending on what kind of music you listen to you might want to go with a 12" over a 10" and think about enclosure types as well because you could have a $1k sub but a ****ty box and it sounds like crap. Dont cheap out on a box

It matters more for ported boxes. If your port/ports aren't tuned at the same frequency as the sub then it will sound like crap. Helmholtz resonance. It matters

+1 If you aren't too picky about brand new and you have time and patience you can easily pick up $500 in equipment for your $250 budget. One man's garbage is another man's treasure.

It is a nice looking box but buying JL is kind of like saying "look how much I can spend on my system"! Not a good thing

Agreed, I've found JL quality in many other brands for a lot less. But JL is some damn good stuff.

I agree with all you guys. Sony will get you some loudness but not so much quality but they sure do last forever.

In my opinion if you are going to stick with 10's make sure you get some quality resonably loud subs, Sound doesnt travel in the maxima correctly. For instance the setup im running pulled a 148db in one car but 141.6 db in my current max.

Most people dont like to give up trunk space but usually in the max subs will sound best positioned closer to the rear of the car. Rule of thumb is that half of the sub diameter sound be your distance away from the rear of the trunk.

So if you are going tens I honestly think jl or kicker will be your best bet. If you are willing to do 12's just about anything would do. Just hate when people get a single 10 or something like that for a bmw. When they roll into my shop I almost refuse to install it because I tell them they wont hear the bass unless they stick their head in the trunk.

Good luck

buy a speaker by the stats not by the price tag... $250 is lot of money for a speaker, but you have to remember that the box is key here not the speaker... also if you can find the infinity Kappa Perfect VQ 10" and build the perfect box for it you will be set...

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EC27ga8...fect10-VQ.html

But remember look for the old school infinity speakers, not the new...

no true whatsoever... there are single 10" woofers out there that can produce more sound than 2 12".... bigger does not mean better... and if you wanna hear the sound inside the car all you have to do is route the port of the box inside the car... yes I have done it before, and it works... if people prefer ported box vs sealed...

Check out electronicsexpress.com

They sell quite a bit of MemphisAudio, Kenwood and other audio components. And they run awesome sales, too. I got my hands on a Kicker C10 for $50 two summers ago (it was the '09 model) when they got their new 2010 model in, and wanted to get rid of the old inventory.

a single 10 can get you plenty of sound with the right equipment and install. To say that you can't means you have a limited set of parameters you are willing to work within. Either your idea of proper bass representation is limited to a certain sound signature, your equipment choices are limited to a certain selection, or your install techniques are limited to a certain pattern.

There are many brands that do well and each has slight characteristic differences that are purely subjective. I have seen a lot of good brand suggestions here and the only one I would toss in that I havent seen yet is image dynamics, if you can still find a 10 from them.

Thats exactly why I said that. Without a doubt a ten can sound better then 2 12's its all about money.

Limiting factor here being budget.

I installed an upgraded free air sub installed in the factory sub location with a new amp. Sounded pretty good but free air subs frequency response doesnt fit everyones needs. Personally doesnt fit my musical needs but my customer loved the upgrade.

his budget is vague. A shame he hasn't posted since starting the thread. he says $250 for some 10s. Don't know if he needs a custom box or amp. For all we know he has a box and amp from an old setup or a buddy and just needs the sub. The safe assumption is that he needs the whole setup. a prefab box can be had for $60 (admitedly not high quality but will probably work for this use), a mono channel amp for another 150 and a single/pair RF/Alpine/Kicker entry level sub for another 50/100. Wouldnt be earth shattering but would be decent. something like this...

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...ss-Bundle.html

yep, those are 12's but a similar setup could be done for 10s. and I suspect the OPs request for 10s was to fit a budget. Most people will do 12s if they can...but like I said, I haven't seen OP back in this thread to answer these kind of questions.

Honestly, I think my w3's are a perfect buy for him . With a decent amp he'll be more than happy with the result.

yes, we know you want him to buy your JLs

I just re-read his OP and it says $250 PER. that's a total of $500 and implies he is budgeting for woofers only. That opens up to a whole lot of options.
