Back after a long time down.

A lot has happened in the year since I was last here. All of it pretty disturbing and upsetting. And the year before that wasnt so good either. But I'm back, and I'm bringing the Max back to fighting fit too.

In that time my Max has been sat in my driveway and has only done about 6 miles. Yep, 6 miles in about 2 years. Obviously it now needs some work to get it back on the road. It needs 4 new tires, the brand new brakes on it need at the least turning of the rotors plus the pads replaced, the dash board has to be put back together - after I've put in a new resistor for the blower motor. I have to give it an oil change, drain the gas tank, new battery, and replace the wire eaten by mice. It could also do with a good wash.

I'm going to start the ball rolling tomorrow by ordering the resistor and a set of tires. I should have those done by end of the week, then I can move it into my garage and change the oil and filter. That is if the brakes arent seized. I'd like to push it in if I can without starting it filled with over 2 year old oil.

Incidentally, my wife's cousin offered me $2K for it in its current condition. I didn't accept his offer

So you should hopefully see me around more often - asking the answers to questions I probably asked 2+ years ago.

After 2 years, you may want to flush all your fluids too (transmission, brakes, coolant)

I wouldn't start the engine until you replace the gas or at least check to make sure it's good.

After that length of time it may just clog your injectors.

Luckily, our tank is so easy to get to haha.

I replaced the fuel and did an oil/filter change today. Put a new battery on it and it fired up just as if it had been left over the weekend.

Have to figure out the check engine light though. I do have a Windows based OBDII scanner, I just have to find it.

Any recommendations for a rear section exhaust, and decent brakes? Budget about $200 - $250 for front pads & rotors, and maybe the same for exhaust. Ordered 4x Conti AWS tires from Tire rack this morning. I cant afford to replace the Pilots with new Pilots. Last time I checked they where $140 - $150 each, but $203 each now?!?!!

Thanks man. Well one of the issues will never go away. My brother was killed 9 months ago. A car hit him on his motor bike and pushed him into the verge where he endo'd head first into the tarmac at 40mph + sling shot speed. He managed to hold on for 27 meters before coming off, so it bothers us that he saw it coming.

The guy got a really good lawyer and only got 160 hours community service and a 15 months ban with 3 points. The defendant was 24, and my brother was the second person he has killed while being behind the wheel.

I'll get pics and keep this thread updated.

Wow, that's absolutely horrible. The criminal justice system sounds about as dysfuntional as it is (here in my County, at least). But it sounds like you may have a very good civil suit against the bastard, and it seems he has the money to pay up.

Nothing's oging to bring your brother back, but it'll be a form of justice. I'm sure your brother would want to to move on & make the max of your life, since his opportunity got cut short. Best of wishes to you & your family from here forward.

There are other....methods of justice. I have a friend that told me what they did to a guy that raped a family member... He won't be doing it again.

So about those brakes. What is the current school of thought for a spirited driven road car?

It seems my lower oil pan has rusted through and poured a good qt of oil onto the drive. Searching around I see that 2000 3.0 pan is the same part number. A local junk yard happens to have one in pristine condition. Should I grab it at $45 or in reality, are the parts different between a 2000 3.0 and a 2002 3.5 and I should just buy a new 2002 for $95?

If you have a 2002 with the SE wheels, go for the 6th gen maxima front brake calipers/rotors. Add powerslot rotors and you are set. Can pick up some used calipers from the salvage yard cheap.

Interesting. I can pick up a full set of calipers, pads and rotors in great condition for $150. The rotors have no lip and the pads look about 20% worn.

There are lots of threads on here about upgrading the 2002 Maxima's front brakes to the 6th gen which also suggest to rebuild the calipers so you know it's 100%. I didn't and have seen 0 problems. Just about to replace pads/rotors in fact.
