City Lights

If anyone here is from central NJ you probably know about auto image in bridgewater right near the somerville circle. One of the guys that work there has a prelude, but what caught my intrest in this car was he had city lights glow while the car is off. How hard is this to do, and what has to be done. I thought it looked really cool at night. How much drilling needs to be done? And do these lights hinder the light of the headlight? Just wondering

Yeah its like this neon glow that comes on when the car is off. Definatly draws a lot of attention to the car when its off.

you could easily hook up some neons to the battery with a switch. Switch it on when the car is off, but not too much or it will kill your battery. Just be careful, not all attention is the compliment kind. (vandals and thieves)

a little correction perhaps?

City lights by definition are actually what the name implies. they have it in Europe and HK. When you're in the city where there's lights everywhere as well as people, you don't want to go blinding people so they developed something called city lights. they're about 5-10watts and for H4 bulbs you can get an attatchment where you don't have to drill and end up getting dust in your light housing. look around online. you can get it in all kinds of colors. i suggest the usual white light unless you want to get pulled over. hope this helps.

arex,
How hard are they to install and does the drilling of the headlight casing effect how well the headlight will work, and like what are the chances of the casing to crack? I think they look awsome, do do they drain the battery when on?

i wouldn't get the ones you need to drill. look around, the "H4 City lights" you don't need to drill. drain the battery? of course, if you leave it on long enough.. even though it's only 5-10watts it'll still drain your battery in time. i don't understand why one would even have lights go on AFTER the car goes off???

are you sure they were city lights? b/c city lights usually are in the same housing as the main bulb and not in the high-beam housing as it is in the IS300. you might have been noticing them as just being driving lights. city lights, as in HK, are sort of a replacement/addition to parking lights for the city. heck, they just look cool. i think they're standard on most cars in HK.

Do a on/off switch come with these or how could you do something like that? How hard is the instillation, could a dummy like me do it?

He said he wanted to have them on with the car off. Hooking them up to the parking lights will have them only go on with the parking lights or the blinkers, depends on how you hook them up.

not even so much when the car is off, but i would only want them on the switch, not with the parking lights.

they're referred to as "H4 City lights". They have a little ring thing at the base of the bulb (See above btwn the two to see the difference). drilling types don't have the ring to clip to your existing bulbs. hope that clears it up.

Are city lights like dimmer headlights? I thought that extra pair of white lights in the RX300s headlamp assembly were city lights..

Haven't installed mine yet, but I do I will let you know how they look. They are going to be definatly dimmer, and have more of a custom neon glow look to them.

haha.. yes, 3 tickets. well, i was enroute to Las Vegas from LA and i was driving on the 15E. so suddenly CHP hits me saying i was speeding at 95 (which i couldn't have been going that fast b/c of the windy roads), and then while i was down, he notices my blue corners (check my profile for pix) and while he was writing that ticket, he also noticed that i had my front windows tinted (which is illegal in CA)... haha.. so yes, 3 tickets in one night on one stop. sux. BUT, i fought the ticket and after a while i won the case... which is nice, but it's not worth the trouble....

If you are ordering from optauto, do this...my friend tried buying the green kit, but all of them are back ordered. So, all we did was buy the base and the bulbs separately and it comes out to the same price, no backorders.

no u actually never use them i mean u can during the day but no one will see them its just another mod that really doesn't do much. i think the main purpose of these babies are for drivers in tokyo and just use them to show people that they are there. or at least thats my view of them can't use them at night cause i coudnl't se and would be pulled over can use them pulling up to a show though
