2001 I30 AC woes
Hey guys,
A few months ago my compressor went out, and we replaced the compressor, evaporator, expansion valve, and that main AC hose that is on top. The works, basically. Still though the AC doesn't really do much if the car is sitting still. It works GREAT driving down the interstate, but doesn't get below 60 degrees in stop and go traffic/sitting still. The mechanic said that my el cheapo dial thermometer was not accurate and that it was actually getting down to 40 degrees, but this doesn't make much sense to me because if I put it in our other car, it gets down to 38-40 within a minute or so. As far as I can tell the rad fan is functioning like normal, but I could be wrong. It seems really loosely installed, I can jiggle the whole assembly quite a bit. This could be normal though; I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to cars. Any ideas?

The radiator fans should not be loose, but they are evidently working or else the engine would be overheating.
I am assuming that the temperature readings that you talk about are in the air ducts. As long as the two of you are measuring in the same location you should have the same reading. That's for you two to argue out.
Were all your parts new? A used/rebuilt compressor can have internal wear and not cool properly. The pressure between the high side and low side lines would not be in spec. The wrong amount of refrigerant could be the problem.
Why don't you take the car to another shop and see what those people say.

Is the condensor next to the radiator fan? The fan kicks on like normal when the car is sitting still with the AC on, but it does not really change the air temp.
If I drive down the highway and then stop, the air stays somewhat cooler, but I let the car idle yesterday with the air at full blast for about 20 minutes and, while the air coming out of the vent was sort of cool, it did nothing to cool down the cabin. It is a black car and it was sunny out, but this was never an issue with the factory AC compressor.
I'm taking it to another shop tomorrow morning.
