Having a really weird cooling issue.

Driving last month. and the temp started heating up a bit. not much but it was hovering slightly above normal (1/4 or below) when siting in traffic. I figured the summer was getting to it a little, check my fluids refilled a little coolant mix and it went back to normal. Then over the weekend it started hover at the half mark and yesterday it went all the way to hot. I've checked the fluids and the radiator is full. I have a slight leak in the radiator some where because some light spray at the bottom of the engine bay.

I'm looking at the Koyorad on IRP and I see two that look the same but have different part numbers and prices. any one had any experience with these? Also would a slowly leaking rad cause slow overheating? When I'm above 50 it backs down to just above half on the temp gauge. This morning on the way to work it was perfectly fine (1/4 after warm up and 10 minute drive) but after making a couple of stops on the way home, it inched it's way up to hot.

Thank you for any advice

If you have a small leak, chances are, you have built up an air pocket in the coolant temp sensor housing. When that air pocket fills with steam, it "reads" a very high temperature. You can purge the air out, but it will be an exercise in futility until you replace the radiator.

I have read good reviews on the Koyos, but when the time comes to replace mine, I'm going with a Mishimoto...

Sounds to me like one of your radiator fans isn't working correctly. If this was a coolant issue then you'd have the overheating problem while you were traveling.

To test: Turn on the A/C and see if both fans are coming on. If they do, drive around the block, pop your hood and wait for them to come on. If the car gets hot and they don't turn on then it's a temp sensor.

BTW I just installed the $80 Koyo over the weekend. Stupid simple repair. It was actually easier than doing the one on my Bronco. The Koyo works just fine, keeps my temps between 190-203 just like the old one did.

Don't forget to get some new upper radiator mounts. Mine were pretty hammered and I'm sure they contributed to to the OEM radiator failure. Oh and you'll need just a gallon of 50/50 coolant.

Checked the fans. They are running full blast. Let it run for 5 minutes and the temp gauge didn't budge?? Dinner just arrived so I'll try purging it afterwards. Thanks for the advice guys.

I installed the Koyo from Importrp and my experience with them and the part was very positive. I have a 5.5 so no Mishimoto for me.

had similar problem, i replaced thermostat and radiator and problem was solved, take the advice and just do both at same time. buy the tyc radiator from rockauto.com $60 shipped and buy the thermostat at the nissan dealership $31 with gasket, trust me on that, i bought the beck arnley thermostat from rockauto and had more problems after! so buy the thermostat from nissan dealership and put prestone 50/50 coolant i used 1.5 gallons so buy 2 and your fans will never reach full blast setting, my temps are from 190-203 it never goes higher. i think full blast setting for fans is 213, so imagine your car is always that hot

Ordered the koyo and a therm from Nissan. Does the gasket have to be ordered separately? Mine only came up to 28 and change.

good for you, most cooling problems will be solved from a new radiator and thermostat, yea the gasket is separate, but the first time i did my thermostat i reused the original metal gasket and it was just fine, i only purchased the new one the 2nd time just to make it complete it was like 3 more dollars, dont reorder just for a gasket you can find it in any local dealer, dont use the autozone paper gaskets though.
