Please Help With My Cold Starting Problem!

I am a first time maxima owner with a 2001 now with 1600 miles. I was having a problem where my car was not turning over right away or would lose power momentarily immediately after starting then would kick in. Once it took me several minutes to get my car started, where I almost called a toe truck. They have reprogrammed my CPU twice since apparently they have been having many problems with cold starting maximas. I thought they had finally solved my problems when a similar problem once again began occurring. I am no long losing power after the car starts, but after a cold start I am again having problems where the car is hesitating to start intermittently, where it sometimes cranks for several seconds longer than I would expect it to, particularly after it rains. My concern is that perhaps this is a sign that my problem is not solved and I am afraid I may be stranded sometime in the near future. My main question is, is this intermittent start-up delay normal for a maxima, or should I be contacting the dealership again? Please help.

I think problem has been discussed a few times before... I believe that we finally agreed on the problem is the Nissan Security system... it takes a few second for it to set itself...(sorry can't explain it any better)... it happens a lot when you turn off the car and try to turn it back on again right away... don't think there anything you should worry about it...

My problem is only when the car is cold, not when I turn the car off and turn it back on right away. It cranks for a while like it is not going to start. This occurs about twice a week, often when it is after a rain. Thanks for taking the time to answer, but I don't think that is it. Anyone else have any ideas? maxgle01

I just wanted to drop a line and say that you are not crazy, and yes something's goofy with your max. A car w/ 1600 miles on it for which you're shelling out a ton of grip should start with enthusiasm every single time.

When my car had this problem, they didn't fix it right. I had to go back a second time, and I politely told the OWNER that "service thinks my car is operating within normal limits, it's obviously not, and I honestly don't want to see it again unless it is fixed correctly. In Minnesota it's not unheard of for people to freeze to death in their stranded cars." I left him my keys and I walked out of the dealership. It got fixed, and I haven't had a problem since.

some max's have a faulty ignition coil. Yours may be defective. or cold weather could just make it a little harder to start the car.

when you start the car, turn the key to power on and wait a few seconds. Then start the car. Sometimes this helps.

if not bring it to the dealer for free warranty work

starting issues

I was reading my owners manual the other night about starting my car...2k1 maxima se. It said...normal conditions keep foot off accelerator and start car. But, when it's cold, depress accelerator and then start. When it's warm outside and car won't start, depress accelerator all the way to floor then start car. Does this work to cure starting problems?

the only thing i have found that helps is turing the key half way and allowing a few seconds to elapse before cranking the car. this occasionally helps, the dealer is absolutely clueless, with the exception of reprogramming the cpu which helps somewhat.

for the record...

if you have the security issue, you will be stuck... period. Tow truck time. this is different.

You know... my car had not done this in a very long time.. but it happened today. crazy. Its been 10,000 since it happened last. Took 3 cranks. finally just let it turn over for about 3-4 secs and it fired. it also happens to be raining today. I was in the middle of running errands, the trip was very short from shop to shop, but the car was fully warmed. It was obviously too fuel rich, but why I dont know.

This happened to me 20 minutes ago here in NY where it is snowing/raining and 39 degrees outside. I have a 2001 w/3000 miles on it, and my mechanic (my uncle) said that maybe I got some bad gas, so I put in some dry gas. This wsn't the first time this happened to me either.

My method of fixing this problem = I start the car and before it shutsdown by itself, I floor the gas and it starts up fine. To me it seems stupid that I just spent $25k on a brand new car that has problems starting up. But then again what car gets paint chips while doing 2MPH

Re: Re: for the record...

i had the same thing happened to me tonight in nyc.
posted this problem before. brought it to the
dealership in the past to look at. they said no
codes appeared or got recorded from the previous
problems i had. so they reset the security chips
in the key. still have the problem afterwards.
seems like the only solution is to gas it after
it starts to idle down as it attempts to shut off.

if anyone has found a cure to this, please advise
as this seems to be a common and recurring problem.
i agree that a new car should not have this problem.
hopefully nissan can find a permanent fix to this as
im not sure what the long term effects of this might
be.

I think Nissan should be embarrased as to the widespread nature of this problem in what is supposed to be a high-end car. They should also be embarrased at their complete lack of ability to pinpoint the cause of this problem while they instead fall back to their "can't duplicate the problem" or there are "no computer indicated errors". I have owned three previous cars, a ford tempo(8 years) a Dodge Caravan(4 years) and a Toyota Corolla(3 years) and in all that time they never hesitated to start rain or shine, bitter cold or very hot conditions. I don't think that the hundreds of people having this problem are imagining it, and I am disgusted that my car "chokes" and doesn't want to start immediately while I have 3000 miles on the thing.
