ATF capacity, definitive answer

So ive searched relentlessly but cant get a straight answer... When I did my drain and refill yesterday, about 5.25 quarts came out. I put the same amount back in and the shifting is still pretty screwy... I want to drain it again today and refill, but I need to know exactly how much to add back in. Majority say 4 quarts, but some are saying 5 and then some say 5.5. I dont know what to believe right now, so maybe someone knows for sure for sure how much to put back in. I plan on going for a 10-15 min drive, jacking the car up and letting it drain for about 2 hours... I should in theory drain out about 5 quarts.. please help, this will be my 3rd drain and fill using the same ATF thats in there... im getting sick of it

this, also check your level before you drain it(car at operating temp and run thru all the gears). You have to check the level while the car is running. If your level is within range all you have to do is add what you drained. To check yourself after you have refilled check the level as you did before you drained it. If you tranny is still "screwy" after the level is perfect them it could be your imagination or another issue. If your gonna drain it again you might want to drop the pan and clean the magnets and screen/filter. You'd need to replace tranny pan gasket and 21 bolts(according to FSM). I hope this helps, good luck.

EDIT: I'd get more fluid even though you just drained it, I wouldn't reuse the same fluid(that what is sounds like your say)

How did you check the level? There is very specific guidelines for this. You should have checked it before draining. After draining only refill with the same amount that comes out. If you did this then the level should be exactly the same as it was.

After refilling you will need to shift through the gears and drive it around a bit to get all the ATF circulated. You should be checking after it is warmed up on a level surface while in park.

Yea so, all this talk about putting in exactly what came out... Thats what Im talking about, not a very definitive answer. Im looking to see how much should exactly come out after 1) warming the car to operating temp. 2) jacking car to highest point. 3) draining all fluid ~3hrs drain

Does anyone know for sure? Im going to check the levels today with the procedure recommended above and take some pics.

The definitive answer is on your dip stick when the transmission is hot.
If your doing a drain and fill, replace with the same mount that comes out or about 4 quarts then check the dip stick as instructed above for the definitive answer.
