Alright,

Either this thing is ridiculous to remove and replace, or I am an idiot. Feel free to confirm either way.

How in the HE11 do you remove this thing? It is bad, and I need it badly. Any tips? Diagrams? Let me google that for you crap? RTFM? Also, would I just replace it with any generic adapter found at the parts store?

If its anything like a 2002 maxima, you need to remove the trim piece it mounts to. In the Maxima's case it is the trim piece that surrounds the shifter, the ash tray, hazard lights button, and the cig lighter. Then unplug the electrical from the back side of the cig lighter and remove. I can't remember the exact details, but I remember you definitely need to remove that trim piece to get at it.... Hope that helps!

 

Sounds fun. I am going to forget about it until I need to run a GPS. The rear adapter works good for my needs right now.

 

Its one screw.

Open your ash tray. Remove the ash tray insert. A screw is then visible. Remove than screw, then remove the trim piece starting nearest the cupholders. Use a panel popper or a small flathead wrapped in a towel. Pop the clips and the trim gets removed. Then just disconnect the 3 electrical harnesses - ash tray light, hazard switch, cig lighter.

Reverse order to reinstall.

 

Once you have all said items out its still a pita to take out. Pick tools work well for the job to get the rear mounted tabs moved just right to slip out.

as an fyi, my cig socket was shot also. It was due to the ground terminal not having a solid connection back to the body of the socket. A simple glob of solder from the negative contact and the metal frame of the cig socket worked well for me and is still going strong.

 

It helps if the gearshift is in D or 2.

The trim has a lip which slides under the bottom/back of te HVAC control.
