Power locks, interior light, etc only works when car is running

Hi,

I am new to this forum and a novice about car and car repairs in general.
I need some help and would appreciate any feedback.

My front speakers stopped working a few weeks back. I went into the fuse box (just below the dash) to see if there was a fuse for the audio system. Could not find it. But while there, I just checked a few fuses out to make sure everything looked normal. After checking the fuses I put everything back as per the diagram and checked it again.

This is where the problem started. Lets forget about the speakers for a minute The power locks, interior lights, trunk release, etc does not work with the car off. These only work when the car is running. Also, when the car is running the warning indicators for an open door and an open trunk are always on. This did not happen at all prior to me checking the fuses out.

The speaker issue was there for more than 3 weeks. Everything else worked as normal till about 2 days back when I decided to check the fuse.

I have done the following so far (after reading some tips online)
1. Disconnected and reconnected battery
2. Checked all fuses again with a meter

Everything checks out ok.

Any suggestions? Read about a "backup" fuse on a site, but cannot locate any information on it.

I truly appreciate your time reading this. I would like to save a trip to the dealer if possible.

Thanks.

What year / model /AT/MT is your car? Electrical diagrams are slightly different for 2000-2003 even though they're considered the '5th generation'.

Were you removing the fuses to check them out? I ask this because i was doing the exact same thing a couple days ago and ended with the same issue you are having. after becoming completely frustrated thinking ive ruined my car i went back to the fuse box and realized i had put one in the wrong place.

Most likely the problem, it's easy to miss the spot.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

The car is a 2001 Maxima, Automatic Transmission.

My original problem was front speakers did not work. Everything else was ok. So I went into the fuse box to see if there was a fuse for the front speakers. Not finding one, I just inspected the other fuses and then put them back. That is when the problem started.

When I get home this evening, I will recheck all fuses again. I will let you know.

Thanks again.

Problem solved - it was indeed one of the fuses. For some reason I cannot make attachments. But to summarize, the 10A Room Lamp fuse goes in location #13 and i had put it in location #14. I had it reverse partially because the diagram and the actual fuse positions were a bit off.

All set for now. Thanks again for having me take a look again.
