Control Arm Removal and Install

Ok...

I am one of the owners that has experienced the leaking power steering hose but overlooked fixing the problem. Now I have a passenger side control arm covered in transmission fluid with no bushing!

What a joy driving has become, the Max goes where ever she wants to!

I have finally fixed the BS-PS issue, (used Gates replacement hose and it was easy to install, THANKS AMAVE) so now I'm ready to tackle this control arm.

Does anyone know what size sockets, wrenches I will need to complete this process? Do I need any specialty tools to take it off or put it back on?

I'm good at working on my Maxima but limited in the tools that I have. I can purchase or borrow what I need but I have no idea what that might be.

Can someone pass me over some much needed information and details?

The bushing you are talking about...is this the one that is towards the rear of the arm, like on the chasis, or is this the one that is near the wheel itself...

I'll bet it's the smaller one in front, right behind the wheel.

You need various sockets and tools. Air/breaker bars help. specifically you'll need 14mm for sway bar link, 22mm for the control arm bolts, and I think 19mm for the ball joint.

It IS possible to do this without touching the axle....as long as you can get the ball joint castle nut off without an issue. If you can't, then I believe the axle nut is 36mm.

Have fun!

You'll have a much easier time if you have use of an impact wrench. There are 4 large bolts that hold the bushing link pin in place on each transverse link ( I forget what size they are...I think 22MM) and they tend to be a pita to get out if they haven't been removed in some time. I'm sure you could get them off with a breaker bar and a pipe too, but an impact makes it easier and faster. The rest of the process is getting out the old bushings and replacing with the new.

I'm pretty sure the nut on the "DESTROYED" part is larger than a 24mm. (Tried to use the 24mm that I used to change the PS banjo bolt)

So the castle nut is a 19mm?

I dont need a ball joint separator since I'm changing the control arm as a whole?

This is just one of the issues you will encounter if you don't get the leaky PS/BS hose replaced or repaired.
