Transmission decision
Transmission decision
I've come to the conclusion that my tranny is shot. It bangs into gear, the RPMs keep rising until near redline until it's able to shift to next gear and there's clunks going from park to reverse or drive.
I'm thinking my only options are to rebuild or purchase a used and have it installed. What would be the least expensive way for either process to be done? If at all..

Don't have it rebuilt. Find a used one with low kms and either install it yourself or have someone do it. Cheapest would be to do it yourself, not a hard job. Either way, avoid rebuilds, it won't be the same and you'll probably end up with further issues unless the guy rebuilding it really knows nissan transmissions.

good look Cj
i went to aamco and they said they could offer a rebuild which I just ignored and left the store. no point in spending half the value of the car... so today or tomorrow i'll be getting more recommendations on what to do. hopefully i won't need to replace.

Just for kicks since you know it's on the way out and you're going to replace it anyway, why not try some of of those magic potions and elixers they sell that promise to improve and somehow repair your ailing gearbox!
Not like you're going to hurt anything besides a few bucks spent...

I'm in the same boat as you...my transmission is shot and I am not willing to spend the money on it for someone else to put one in. Last week andrewmac had almost talked me in to putting one in myself. I'm still thinking about it. Just taking my time since its a third vehicle for me. I'm hoping to work a little on it this weekend to see if I can make it happen. My thought is that I am going to try to take my old one out first and if I can do that then I will buy a used one to put in its place.
Too bad we're not closer or we could have a transmission replacement meet up. Ha.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do...and keep us updated.
By the way, check out my previous posts (I don't have many) for andrewmac's guide on how to install it yourself. It honestly doesn't seem TOO hard. But I'll let you know on Monday.

i'm not doing it myself lol. i don't have the time to. believe me, there is no point in rolling around with a shot tranny. when you pay someone to install it that money will be well worth it..
