Drastically improve your cars handling cheaply and with no mechanical work

I came up with this idea when I used to take my 93 Nissan Maxima SE out for a little fun. My Maxima had a surprisingly good suspension, and could take corners at pretty amazing speeds (for a fwd sedan). The only problem was that the drivers seat had very little lateral support. This meant that, although my car was having no problem negotiating a turn at high speed, I was leaning over at a 50 degree angle, desperately hanging on to the steering wheel.
The problem with being thrown about like this is that your own bodies natural balance is thrown out of whack. While you are trying to correct your own body posture, there is no way that you can accurately feel what the car is doing at that moment.
So I thought up this idea for a setup that acts like a racing cars five point harness to hold the driver in place. My idea doesn't involve installing a five point harness. My idea involves purchasing two weight lifting support belts from your local sporting goods store (get the ones with the velcro straps.) Strap one belt through the hoop on the other belt, thereby joining them together to form one long belt. Now, get in your car, run the belt around the drivers seat behind you, and strap it tightly around your chest, just under your arms. Make sure it's tight. Now go attack your favorite set of twisties. You will be amazed. It's like getting a whole new car
As an added convenience, I cut two slots in either side of my drivers seat cover which supported the two belt ends. It made using the belt as convenient as using the seatbelt.

good one
I've never type LOL before, but I actually am laughing out loud. Is this for real? Did you also buy seat covers for the passenger and rear seats, because all your friends will be ****ING themselves all over your seats when you "buckle up."

I was trying to be nice, but it does seem a little odd
if you think about it, it's actually a good idea...follow my logic here:
Handling prowess is completely biased, in my eyes. I could get in a Z06 and say it handles like crap compared to my CRX... when in fact it may handle perfectly to someone else. I may not like the immense on-throttle oversteer that the Zo6 exhibits and hate how it plows during off-throttle cornering...
On the flipside, another person would hate how my CRX handles...
This can be expressed by Scooby owners. Their cars don't click off great "handling stats" but they are considerd to be great handling cars.
This directly relates to the driver. If the driver FEELS the car is more connected to his motions, it's going to "handle" better in his mind. The movement of your body in a turn makes the car feel sluggish. Try it sometime. go autocross without your seatbelt on. Or go to a local empty parking lot and try to do some aggressive turns without a seatbelt on... it would APPEAR to "handle" worse.
Ultimately, handling is a perception in most cases.
Of course, i'm not gonna go get two vecro straps and wrap them around my chest anytime soon...just another view point.
and Mingo, i know you mean well, but the term "Ricer" seems to apply much more to this forum lately then any other. I wouldn't be so liberal when tossing that term around.

I don't even use my weight belt when I lift. It gives me a false sense of security. Drive with one?? I sure don't want a false sense of security on how my car handles.
don't forget the small detail about safety...
should you (God forbid) hit someone head on you're going to get the backlash and/or the spine break of the century. There's a reason there are pretensioners on seat belts ya know.
Otherwise, on an extremely controlled environment... i guess it's a good idea.

i really apreciate the heads up tho.. i'm sure someday i'll get flamed real hard for using the term rice so liberally, but i can live with it, and i'm sure i'll be able to deal with it witout involving hostility.
Hmmmm....I think I heard about this in my diversity training at work

I have done a grip load of installs on many civics, integras, crx (including mine) and such.. the term rice is just like the derogatory word, "*****" i feel i can use it as freely as i want since i am of taiwanese/chinese decent. and because the origination of my interest in automotive alterations began with civics, and integras installing those very "abstract" mods, i feel i am legible to use the term RICE as freely as i please, because i am Rice.. i eat rice, my ancestors picked rice, my mama eats rice, woman cooks rice, my grandma cooked rice, and most of all i drove rice... so i think it'll be ok for me to say RICE...
