Rusted Radiator Support

I am currently in the process of dropping my transmission to replace the clutch (slowly, it's cold). While under the car I noticed the radiator support has started to rust. I know this is typical and many of you have replaced them. My question is about trying to save it. It still seems early in the rusting phase. The steel is structurally sound (for now). Has anyone had any luck with rust converter and paint to prevent further deterioration?

They rust from the inside-out. If you can see it on the outside, or bubbling, then it's probably too late to save.

Replace it now since you have parts off or do it again when it totally crumbles.

I looked into this stuff. Definitely seems worth a try.

I'll pull the radiator and have a look before I do anything. I have to drain it to replace the lower rad hose anyway.

Just FYI, paint and spray inhibitors are great but rust doesn't sleep until it's been totally sanded/grinded off, treated and sealed. You might be able to cover the surface rust but if it's anything deeper than the surface you are just delaying the inevitable.

If and when you do get the new OEM piece, paint it, rust proof it, rubberize it before you install it. Spray the insides as well.
